Just bought a Beogram 1100 turntable, there is no cartridge on it,  the radial tonearm is in a raised position such that the top is level with the closed lid. It naturally springs back to this position after any physical lowering of the tonearm. The turntable is working, the tonearm moves across to the correct position above the start of the record when play is pressed but does not lower. What is likely to be the problem here and how is it fixed?

Welcome to Beoworld !

Without a cartridge the tonearm will stay high up, resting on the underside of the dustcover when closed.
This is normal.

Put a little finger-weight on the tonearm, just a few grams to immitate the weight of a cartridge and
feel for correct lowering/raising of the arm.
