I'd like to connect a 2012 Panasonic blu ray to my Beovision 5 plasma. As the BV5 has no HDMI connection and the blu-ray has only HDMI or Component/RCA my connection options are;
1. use a component/RCA to scart lead, or
2. a scart/HDMI converter.
are there any pros/cons to either option?

If your player is breaking out the digital signal to component analog, I see no reason to do it again with a 3rd party product to get the same result.
