Is it time to dust off my reel-to-reel?

Actually, I have a good friend who has done a lot of field recording and remastering in his career. He was big into recording folk music and story telling in remote areas, and has done work for the Smithsonian and Library of Congress.

What's really interesting is his gear stash...he can play everything from Edison cylinders up to DAT tape and other digital formats. Has multiple turntables and open reels, etc. I think the only format he doesn't have the ability to play is 8 track, and he may even have one of those stored away somewhere.

My son (aged 15) absolutely loves his LPs he spends all his pocket money on vinyl.

All played through a B&O turntable of course!

The sound is just exquisite some much more realistic and warmer than digital versions.

I went to a vinyl record fair at the weekend and was staggered at how much some of the pressings were, most good ones were from £30

A growing number of people want to see their music being "reeled off" tape and vinyl. They work using computers, and don't want to use computers when they have time off.

A few years ago, you could pick up a box of vinyl records for a pittance at second hand stores, garage sales or markets - sometimes the boxes with records were free, if you would just do the owner the favour of taking them with you.

Now, vinyl is being appraised and priced accordingly.
I have thousands of LPs, and some turntables, as well as a reel-to-reel player. If you want to see crazy prices, check out what original tapes of certain productions are going for these days -- or what The Tape Project is charging for their issues.

It's not ever going to be the majority of the market again, but it's where the big margins are for today's musicians, which is why they are issuing more and more new vinyl, you get to charge more for the LP.

(BTW - if you have a turntable and like prog, get this record.)

That's good news. Another reason to keep as many Beograms as possible alive.

My two nephews asked me to find some turntables for them. So I found a Beogram 2404 and a Beogram 1800 (80's model).
"And there were much joy and happiness..."  :-D

There's still hope for the next generation ;-)

Btw: Am I the only one who can not use the smileys here on Beoworld??? I used to - but for more than a month I have not been able to insert them.
