I have a BeoSystem 4500 that I hadn't used in years. Years ago, I had used it in slave mode in my ML system. However, I disconnected it when I added a BeoCenter 2 because the 4500 was not compatible with and interfered with N.MUSIC and N.RADIO. Years later, I have replaced the BeoCenter 2 with a BeoSound 5. Now that the feature has been provide on the BeoSound 5 to assign N.MUSIC to the "CD" command and N.RADIO to the "RADIO" command (which I have done), I wondered if it might be possible now to connect an older system back into the ML network in "slave" mode.

I have the BeoMaster 4500 in 1.6 mode (slave mode) and using the TAPE2 setup option. I have the BeoMaster connected by Aux cable from the TV/AUX connection to a type 1612 Beolink converter. I did not connect a powerlink cord between the BeoMaster 4500 and the Beolink converter. Naturally, I have the Beolink converter connected by ML cable to the rest of the ML network.

The BeoMaster 4500 is correctly controlling the BeoSound 5 master when using "link" and then the appropriate audio command. However, there is no sound coming from the speakers connected to the BeoMaster 4500. There is sound coming from the speakers connected to the BeoMaster 4500 when playing locally attached music (such as the BeoGram 4500 CD player or the radio on the BeoMaster 4500), but there is no sound from the BeoSound 5 audio master.

Any thoughts on this or suggestions?

Hi

I think that you should use a powerlink cable between your beomaster 4500 and the converter.

You will be able to send or receive commands + sound.

I have a bm5 and bsystem 4500 , let me know if this solves your problem.

I would like to use my mlgw and I would like to use it with the converter. It seems that it is possible.

4 beolab 5,  beolab 9, beolab 10, beolab 5000, beolab 8000 mk2, beolab 6002, beolab 3500, beovision 7 55 mk2,  2 beovision 11 46 mk4, beotime, beosound ouverture, beosound essence, beoplay A8, beomaster 900 RG de luxe and the collection continues...

I doubt that the additional PL cable will have any influence on that.

I've had my BS4500 connected to ML (via converter) for years without the PL.

The only advantage of the additional PL is (with the BM as slave/opt 0)  that you can start a source - e.g. the Radio - through touching the soft touch panel 'button' of the BM, and get sound from your attached vdeosystem without pushing the Radio button on the Beo4.

I've tried connecting a PL cable between the BM4500 and the converter, but it made no difference. Logically, it would seem that the PL connection is just for sending sound OUT from the BM4500 and not TO the BM4500. What's odd is that the BM4500 is definitely sending control to the BeoSound 5 via the aux cable to the converter and through the MasterLink network. Sending the command "LINK" "RADIO", for example, will switch the BeoSound 5 to the internet radio (I have assigned the command "RADIO" to replace "N.RADIO."). What's really odd is just that there is no sound from the BeoSound 5 audio master playing through the speakers of the BM4500 audio slave. When using the remote to send "LINK" "RADIO" to the BM4500, the BeoSound 5 switches to the correct function and "AUX" shows up on the BM4500 panel. There just isn't any sound coming through the BM4500's connected speakers.

I think the only other product that can serve similarly as an audio slave is the Ouverture. Has anyone had success using an Overture as an audio slave connected via Masterlink to the BeoSound 5?

A.OPT 1.6 for BM4500 is new to me. I know 1.6...2.6 options from old BVs like MX3000/3500, LX BVs for using them as link TVs.

But if your BM4500 is an early one way version (sw 1.XX), try a BL VIDEO MK II. Connect it as you did with BL converter. You won`t need a PL cable.

Set your BM4500 to A.OPT 2.

Now pressing RADIO will start your BS4500 in RADIO mode - BS5 should stay in STDBY mode. Pressing LINK - RADIO should start your BS4500 in AUX mode. start your BS5 in N.RADIO (RADIO) mode. Same with CD of course...

I would check:

- What SW is BM4500?

- Does BM4500 display MUTE when pressing LINK - RADIO?

- Does BM4500s STDBY light flash when you select A.OPT 1.6? Don`t think so.

- Try A.OPT 2.6. Maybe this works, but I don`t think so.

Forget the 1612 and let the 4500 act as a simple a.aux source on the BS5.

Connect the AUX (4500) to the input of a UCA222, with a DIN to RCA cable. The USB of the UCA goes to the Beomaster5. Assign n.music and n.radio back to default, so the commands CD and Radio are free to use on the 4500. However, to use CD and Radio, first thing you have to do is give an a.aux command to wake up the the USB-port of the BS5. Hope this make sense.

That's actually the opposite of what I'm trying to achieve. I'm trying to to use the BeoMaster 4500 as a link room speaker to access the music FROM the BeoSound 5. I think that the BeoMaster 4500 (older one-way version) and the Ouverture are the only two audio systems that can be used as an audio slave like this. I guess I could just accomplish what I want by replacing the BeoMaster 4500 with a masterlink active box. I was just hoping to put the vintage but still beautiful BeoSystem 4500 back to good use.

O, I see what you mean. I think you want your 4500 in Audio Option 6. Which is strange because this is only possible with the audio systems from BS3000 and newer. Quite the opposite of what you think is possible. Maybe I misunderstood your question...

In the BS4500 manual - which can be found on the B&O webpage - page 33 talks about 'pre-programming'/options.

I am not saying that I understand that, but it might be usefull in this case.

Actually it always was 'weird talking' for me - especially the part: "Option 6 is for future use, and must not be selected"

I never dug deeper into this, because I always used (still do) my BS4500 as a slave (A-opt. 0) to the BV's in my system.

P.S. Even if it would not be helpfull in this case, I would appreciate if someone could explain what's that really is about (the BM4500 being "a slave in a MCL 2 system" etc).

Greetings Mileissen
