What do you guys recommend for lubrication?

I am specifically interested in my Tandberg 9000X reel-to-reel deck. I just heard that these decks are notorious vis-à-vis regular lubrication and mine has had none in 42 years. Clearly this needs to be addressed pronto.

I’d also like to know what you guys use on the Beograms. I’ve been using sewing machine oil, which appears to work, but perhaps there is something better.

Usually the service manuals specify the lubricants - and most of them are impossible to find.

Sewing machine oil for bearings and lithium grease for gears, sliding tracks etc seems to be a good starting point.

The next time I have a need I'm going to try the Archoil range of gun oils. They are tungsten disulphide / hexagonal boron nitrate based lubricants that create some amazingly low friction. There's a WS2 based dry film lubricant that bonds to plastic, metal, almost anything, and in theory, it should be ideal for Beogram arm carriages as it doesn't attract dust either. We'll see.

Thanks all, very, very interesting.

Slightly different subject, but my friend/advisor on my Seeburg M100B jukebox was horrified that I had used sewing machine oil on my jukebox…. much too light duty for a jukebox.

So I checked the lubrication charter on the back of the jukebox which specified 20W motor oil, not that different from Marco’s 15W40, which is multi-grade oil.

This is great information.

20W instead 40 multigrade because here in North of Italy winter are warmer than in Canada πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„ so much better use more fluid oil in your country ❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️⛄️⛄️

Long time use of motor or machine oils on some kinds of plastic will make it more brittle, for my BGs I use Liquid Bearings and silicone grease, for my music box whatever is in the oil can, and where needed axle grease.

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Hi Marco,

That was a good one, cruel, but good none the less. Ah the north of Italy, absolutely beautiful country!

The clever and droll geographical comment aside, I took the weight from the lubrication chart on the back of the jukebox; it is the same for all locals.

I live in Victoria, British Columbia, the “garden city” of BC. All people seem to talk about here is the fact that we have the best weather in all Canada. Seriously, I hear this virtually every day. What they mean is it doesn’t get all that cold as compared to the rest of the country…. what they leave out is it rains 9 months of the year AND you can easily got for 2 weeks straight without once seeing the sun. (Like right now!)

I think I gonna go out and buy some of your 15W40 oil! Well that or move to Santa Barbara, California.

Hi Søren,

I am quite certain that I only used the sewing machine oil on metal parts within my Beograms.

As for the Seeburg M100B there is precious little plastic in that 62 year old beast. There is a large plastic drive wheel, but the manual called for white grease, which is what I used.

This.

p.s. - LOVE Santa Barbara.  Anyone besides me see the cinéma vérité series 'An American Family', which was filmed there?
