Hi guys,

I've recently acquired a pair of s55's thanks to a very kind person... I have re-foamed the woofers (completely perished) and they work great. The only thing I don't like about them is a lack of bottom end... the bass is there but its not as strong as I like... Is this just the way the s55's are or would a re-cap give me back some bass?

I picked up a pair of S55 speakers a couple of years ago thinking they looked nice and hoping they would be good.  I had to replace the surrounds on them but I also did a recap on the crossovers.  I did one crossover and compared it to the other speaker without recapping.  I couldn't tell a difference. I did go ahead and recap the second one though.

Initially I was underwhelmed by the S55 speakers but I kept them as my test speakers in my workshop. Maybe I am getting used to them or maybe they have broken in but they sound pretty good to me now. In playing different styles of music from classical to jazz to rock, I get the full range of frequencies on mine. When there is bass content the S55's deliver what I expect them too. That is probably what you mean when you mention "the bass is there". They can't compare to the output I get from my MS150 speakers but I don't expect them to.

I would give them a chance to grow on you too. Do you have them on their stands?

Newly refoamed woofers will always be a bit "stiff" until the new foam losens up.
Just like when the speakers were new.

Like Dillen and Sonavos says. Give them time to brake on. Its also a lot about placement, positioning & room size. They normally sound better on stands.

If the room is large try corner posistion or mount them on the wall.

In my mind the successor of the famous S45-2, meaning a great speaker.

Thanks for the replies...

Just to be clear the speakers do sound very nice, they produce wonderful mids and highs, and when running a 10-100Hz frequency sweep through them they produce some very deep bass with no distortion. The bass just seems to be lost when playing music... You could be on to something with the placement. My current JBL e60s have much more oomph but they are big floor standers so I suppose that should be expected.

This is how I have them set-up... what do you think?? I would love a pair of stands if anyone has some they are willing to part with...

A recap will normally not give any better, at least not stronger or heavier bass. The woofer signal is filtered through a coil which doesn't age, so he bass is normally very little affected by aging filters.
