Hi, i am still having problems trying to get the best sound from my Pentas. At the moment they are in the corners of a room that is roughly 16foot square with 12 foot high ceilings. The room is carpeted and has a large sofa in it as well.
my problem is that they sound muffled even though i have re-foamed the mid range drivers, they are connected to a BV8 and i have a BM6500 conncted with a project turntable and apple tv via Dac as sources.
the problem seems to manifest itself after i have returned from my weekend home which has 2 S75 speakers and a BM5500 connected with a turntable and apple tv via just a normal dac connected. In this room the ceiling are lovwer and it has wooden floors. This system sounds great, it is clear, the bass is fine and it has a nice full sound.
i am pulling my hair out as the pentas should sound better? I have tried connecting them directly to the Bemaster but this makes it worst. Is it the differences in the rooms, a problem with the BM or are the S75s simply better and i should get a pai r of them instead?
Any exeriences from other users greatly appreciated. I didnt have the problem till i had something to compare the setio with. Wondering if replacing the BM. With an Onkyo amp with digital inouts and phono and connecting that to the pentas as a preamp would improve things?
Pentas have a quite narrow sweet spot. They sound best sitting in font of the with your ears in the same level as the tweeters. Also you should check the crossovers. I've seen several of them with burnt coils. Probably a recap will make the more crisp & detailed.
//Bo.A long list...
I can only second what the others said - if they are an old pair, they will most probably benefit a lot from a recap, but try the easier things first.

Thanks. I will try moving them tonight to see if thAt helps
is a recap relatively straightforward?, how do i check the cross overs?, i can use a soldering iron and reasonably comfortable taking them apart
The crossover are two PCB's at the bottom of the column. You have to remove bottom to access them. Fist is to make a visual check.
Does all components look alright? No leaking or bulging caps, no burned coils? If all looks OK the caps can be checked with an LCR & ESR meter. Only the electrolytic capacitors has to be checked.
