Beocom 1600 screeching feedback problem on speakerphone mode

Hello,

I am having a problem with feedback when using the speakerphone option.  I have tried moving the handset as far away from the base as possible (and with the microphone end opposite the base speaker), but there is still an earsplitting feedback problem.  Phone works fine in standard phone mode. 

Is there any way of setting or reducing the phone handset microphone to eliminate feedback.  There is a speaker volume adjustment I assume that there is no microphone aside from the handset microphone, so the handset has to be out of the cradle for speakerphone.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.  Love the phone, hate the feedback......
