I've been told that the next Apple OS update will allow High Res Audio - in other reviews some are saying that it wont make much difference to the sound quality - any thoughts? I would have thought with some of the B&O setups out there it would be very welcome.

It all depends on your ears and your appreciation to the music, and the quality of the composed sound itself. Just because it is High res does not mean that the source sounds is necessarily good enough. And of course the speakers and other components matter to. But of course it is good that it might offer support for higher quality sound.

I would find it very interestingly if Apple would sell Hi Res files. But its still a rumour, not a fact. Today I still use Qobuz or Linn who has some high quality.

What would be more of a revelation to me in the music world is the absence for good production and mastering, this would obviously contribute to the final quality of any music.

I agree a lot depends on how it is mixed and mastered - I get really good sound now from Apple TV>BV8>Penta II via the HDMI cable - I was messing around with a DAC and the speakers plugged into a BM6500 - I realised half the problem was that my favourite album is imply badly recorded in the first place as everything else sounds good.

I read that Apple are beefing up their High Res iTunes Library after acquiring Beats and will launch at the same time as they announce the new operating system - and maybe even apple tv? Anyway, anything that imporves the source material must be a good thing - fingers crossed it happens and makes a noticabe difference.

A good source on the net to check out how good records are mastered: loudness-war.info

Great ! Thanks.

Not saying I am a T-Rex fan, however the two Tanx entries (1985, 2000) on the first page of the listings illustrate what some of you have said and many of us know .... modern (re)mastering is a race to mediocre sound

However seeing how this is a database created from various people I am not sure what it is actually telling me when I search on "Hotel California" !

Am I seeing/hearing that there is no perfect recording ?

Definitely not the one from HDTracks. But it seems a lot of HDTracks titles are just upconverted 44.1 sources. Don't take loudness-war to serious, its only a good guidance before you put your hard earned money on the counter. Looks the 2012/180gr vinyl from Hotel California has a good DR, its done by Kevin Gray formerly mastered at AcousTech, I truly find him alongside the best engineers with Steve Hoffman, Rudy Van Gelder. Not everyone will agree, but I find mastering is the very key in this whole process.

I sold my LP12 Sondek turntable Crying

Not the 'very key' - there are many important steps leading to a good recording, starting with good miking.

But the mastering is where most things are messed up/worsened/degraded.
