Just tried an old 45 on my Beogram 6500 and noticed that when the record spins up the plastic 45 spindle lifts the record up for a moment (a few millimeters) before settling just in time for the needle to swing in.  I never noticed this before so I wasn't sure if this was a normal mechanical movement or something needing to be adjusted.  Regardless, it scared the heck out of me as I have a new sapphire cantilever cartridge from Axel and the thought of the arm hitting the edge of the record with the cantilever gives me chills.

Is this normal?

Perfectly normal. - Both the record lifting and the surprised owner.
Record size is determined by weight.
It can lift a seven inch record but not a twelve inch. That's how it knows which size is on the platter.
