This hint from a long time, yet infrequent poster, has prompted me to download the testing App and experiment.

Once I understood the App my eyes were opened to possibilities - I have not yet decided whether to buy the full version - mainly because the "airplay" client on my A3 is detected, but seemingly would not received the "broadcast" ben through the Apple TVs just did fine.  The PnP DLNA support also did not seem to work with the two types of DLNA servers I have.

More importantly - and the real reason for this post - is that it led me to some thoughts about what B&O could do with WISA speakers if they adopted something like this for an audio controller that distributed music from a NAS (or whatever) to various speakers in different rooms with the concepts of Speaker Groups built in ....

I might also reccomend the Iphone/Ipad app called Whaale to stream music from your Idevice directly to multiple Airplay devices. Spotify is unfortunately not supported ...

Thanks - I will test the free testing app from them.

However their UI is skeuomorphism gone mad !

Very interesting!

I guerss the NAS is not on the horizon for B&O, but the thinking behind the Moment goes along these lines. I don´t know enough about this area to have a qualified opinion, but I do notice that streaming has gone from being a nice feature to being the main way a lot of people listen to music and radio. If they can do something like this (drawing above), that would be great. Another thing that came to mind: Should B&O develop something like this for audio only? I can imagine that customers will think of streaming as a seamless integration of audio and video, they would like to use Netflix the same way they use Spotify throughout their homes and lives?

Can't they currently do that with the essence?

The essence is plugged in to a NAS and that can distribute to speakers either wired or via the transmitter? no?

EXCEPT... it doesn't have speaker groups.

Or am I missin' summink?

PS Some people have posted what they "know" the moment to be.  Have people actually seen it?  I can't wait.

Yes, a small thing ... the Essence is a single room system; and you can't network the rooms if you had two Essences.

So what the Whaale does is allow you to tune the distances of the speakers in different rooms from the source.  Thus helping to ensure that they are all in sync.  The purchased App allows one (I believe) to switch on the rooms remotely.  Of course you have to an airplay device in each room - my tests were with an Apple TV as I don't have an Airport Express.  I would have to think whether an Essence in each room would do the same job.. In which case you might have the best of both worlds Smile

Thank you Roger !

Perhaps we should ask Peter to construct a survey to give us a poll ?

Interesting articles on WiSA technology and multiroom sound:

http://www.twice.com/news/audio/wisa-developing-wireless-multi-room-extension/45785

http://www.channelnews.com.au/industry/sound/DRNIGGMQ-a-new-wireless-technology-that-pumps-sound-through-three-walls-coming-soon.aspx

That should not be unknown to B&O - we'll see what comes.

This is a really good question!

That might be what most people want. But video/video services and multiroom is a very delicate subject due to all kinds of licence problems.

If we would have to wait for the 'complete solution' it might take long before we get anything at all.

My guess is, that B&O will concentrate on music services, when it comes to multiroom setups.

To day there already are lots of ways to distribute audio to several rooms (AirPlay/DLNA), but mostly there is a 'limiting factor' in these 'setups'.

The example with an Essence/Playmaker/AppleTV in each room and distributing from a Pc/Mac via Airfoil was mentioned above.

Not the most userfriendly setup, but a possibility.

The main problem however will be to have one overall userinterface for controlling a complete setup - maybe the Moment is that userinterface?

Those who have optained the best results in multiroom audio are using a MESH Network - such as Sonos, Samsung (WAM), both have one app to rule the entire setup.

As mentioned above - there might be some new possibilities coming with the WiSA technology. Will B&O be the first company to use those?

Bang & Olufsen will be the first to use this new WiSA XD multi-room audio system wirelessly.

Presentation at CES Las Vegas in January 2015 and availability in Spring/Summer 2015.

•The current WiSA technology transmits up to 7.1 channels of uncompressed 96/24 audio up to 10 meters line-of-sight within a room. The new technology, called Extended Distance (XD), will support a 7.4 home theater speaker system simultaneously with up to seven zones of multiroom audio. Range will expand to 100 meters line of sight, or 40 meters through two walls, or 30 meters through three walls.•

We must wait for the right time: the BeoSound Moment. Yes - thumbs up

I hope that current WiSA Loudspeakers evolve freely to the new XD standard.

Maybe,Transmitter 1 and BeoLab Receiver 1 will change for the number 2 or

the WiSA XD will be reserved for BS Moment only !?

In addition to his links, I entered a wild card search around some of his terms: "MESH Network - such as Sonos, Samsung (WAM)" and came up with this hit ... serendipitously I liked the author's writing/humour style and he gives a nice rundown ...

I hope you enjoy the read, and the two youtube links he provides.

This afternoon's test ... Two ATVs being driven by the free test App (playing Al Stewart's "On The Border") with Family ATV playing over that BV8's Master Link to a BL11 and BL6Ks in the third room ...

A combination of the 'good old' MasterLink and one or more BeoLink Active's will provide some nice options.

Connect an Essence to a ML-AudioMaster alternatively to a Converter 1611 (as driver), or a ATV to a ML-BV. Make a MasterLink chain of one or more BeoLink Active's in as many rooms as you like. Connect a Playmaker to the PC-in of the Active's in every seperate room.

Now you can adress all rooms with the same music through the Essense on the Master and/or each room individualy through the Playmaker/s.

Maybe not quite 'wireless' - but not bad at all....

....untill we will have something nicer.
