Hello all,
I just picked up a Beogram RX 2 for $10, knowing that it had some issues.
The tonearm does not track properly. It keeps swinging back to the beginning of the record or at least partway back. The play and cue mechanisms seem to be working well.
I discovered that the counterweight post had become detached from the plastic o-ring at thte back of the tonearm, so i superglued it back, and now it seems to adjust the tracking weight just fine. However, the tonearm continues to "wander" back to the beginning of the record somewhat randomly.
There is also intermittent grounding buzz and hum.
Before i dig any further into this unit. I thought I might see what thoughts others may have on this siutation.
It does not appear to be a counterweight problem, as that issue seems resolved. The needle may be worn, but it feels like it still has a decent point to it.I would like to get a new cartrige, but they are quite pricey.
Is this a mechanical problem, or do i just need a new cartrige?
Thanks,
Will
Underneath the turntable there is an antiskating adjuster dependant on which cartridge you use. Make sure this is set to the correct cartridge type you have (MMC1 - 5)
The tonearm will also need to be balanced properly according to the instructions in the user manual (available on Beoworld for Silver and Gold members)
Welcome to Beoworld by the way.
Dave.
Thanks for your quick reply Dave,
I balanced the tonearm, and set the tracking for the cartridge, which is a mmc 4.
As i have continued to investigate. I took the platter off to see how the tonearm would behave without the needle being involved.
If i press cue, push the tonearm towards the center, then press cue again, the tonearm will lower and then swing quite rapidly away from the center, bounce a couple of times, and come to a rest. It alomost seems as if the counterweight or tone arm is bent or something. But i don't see anything like that. Ican only guess that a spring is somehow malfunctioning.
At least i know it is not a problem with the needle.
Normally a bad needle will cause skating to the middle, first of all balance the counter weight to "0", then adjust the scale to "0", then move the counter weight to 1,5 gr. and try again, if still skating, check the anti skating mech. inside the BG.
There is a manual onsite for silver and gold members, the manual shows the adjustment needed.
The hum or buzz you hear may be a bad grounding, if using the 5 pin DIN plug, check if the outer metal cover of the plug is grounded to chassis of the BG, if using RCA plugs, and a non B&O amp, connect a ground wire from BG chassis to amp chassis.
Welcome to the forum
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Dave beat me to it
Hi Soren,
Thanks for you response.
I think the groundinbg issue is fairly straightforward.
I have done the anti-skating and balance adjustments, it just feels as if something is puling the tonearm away from the center, either by weight or by a mechanical process. It gets pulled away only when the needle sets down on the record. If i press cue, then move the tonearm towards the center, then it just stays where i leave it. Although it still seems to want to move to the outside the more towards the center that i move it.
Sorry if i am being unclear. I hope this reveals something.
The anti skating mech. is inside the deck, you will have to open it and check for missing or broken spring, or other mach. failues, it sound to me as an anti skating thing
Can you describe how to get into the deck? Is it from the back or the front?
I am not familiar with the RX2, but probably the more or less the same as my BG 5000, from the top, too much to describe, try to get a manual, available onsite for silver and gold members
OK.
I'll give it a shot.
