Hello!

I have found an unused - and I mean unused - absolutely mint 70's Beocord 5000!

I bought it for a miserly €30 from a nice elderly person. I guess it will be okay, just a set of belts and a few caps!

I'll keep you posted with photos etc.

I am like a kid at Xmas!

Oh, and the Beolabs are coming!

As our American friends would put it: EYE CANDY!

This would be my favourite cassette mech... but it can be temperamental I hear. My own has been VERY stable (it's a two-header). I enjoy the lack of stupid idler wheel and the double capstan with its HUGE flywheels, so big that they wouldn't be out of place in an open reel tape-recorder, and its intelligent, Revox-like, speed regulation circuit,!

Best of luck! These have the reputation as being the most difficult machines to service that B&O made!

Yes I know Peter. Tim even sent me a few pictures and explanations about a mod he did (for you?) but mine did not need it. It just works and works!

I had to replace an (impossible to find) op-amp, the end-of-tape sensor, and quite a few caps though! Martin supplied the belts.

I hope the second one will be as easy!

Jacques,

I remember visiting Tim last year and he showed me the 5000 he had modified using some of the 'simplified' approach to the mechanics of the 70s Beocentre 4000. Unfortunately, when he tried to demonstrate it, it didn't want to work, so even he has trouble with the thing.

I've had two, neither of which wanted to much more than light up. Mind you, for 30 Euros, I would be quite happy to just display a mint example of a very beautiful cassette deck.

I know! I had the exact same reaction when I saw Jari's post: I just had to own one! I didn't really need it of course...

And now I'VE GOT TWO!

Maybe instead of building stereo racks/stands, my next project should be a workbench.  Where's the old "scratches chin thinking" emoticon when you need it?

All i can say, is that if you tackle hifis on a fairly regular basis a dedicated work area is essential!

The Beocord is with me! Plus schematics, manual and serial number stickers! It even works, yes, works!

And boy does it look amazing...

Well to me it's just gorgeous and I love the construction, a notch above the best Naks I've got. And the sound is truly excellent. This one, a 4715, has absolutely no wear.

Throw away? Come on Leslie!

My second example has no visible wear on its switches at all. Even the lid looks shiny new.

Smile

First pictures, before cleaning or doing anything. Not bad actually. As you can see, the buttons are nice. It plays music but I suspect a few rough edges around the PLAY/REC contacts, since I had to press REC a few times to get rid of some static. Of course I will need new belts, although these ones aren't broken—yet!

Serial number. When was it made? We know where Big Smile

The heads look good too... This one is different from my other Beocord 5000. And it is perfectly aligned to the cassette, unlike the other one which has a tilt (normal it seems). Nothing was touched or re-adjusted. There is some dust! It sat next to a Beomaster 6000 Quad in a cupboard. The BM was sold for a ludicrously small amount. Not to me Angry

One more, a bit fuzzy, sorry. Even with all its original caps, it sounds pretty good! Think Beocord 9000 here...

By the way, my other BC 5000 4715 had all of its caps replaced, but they tested good. Now I wonder about this one. Perhaps I'll let them alone. Even the PPM looks accurate! Only the belts are marginal, and I'll probably have to lubricate the motor bearings, although they are silent.

No, no, an ordinary, late series Maxell XLII. I once had a metal one, very nice but too dear.

Nevertheless, the XLII of that vintage (1988-92) is IMO one of the very best type II's ever made.

That Beocord is a real time machine, it puts my 5000 type 4705 to shame!

Vinyl records, cassettes, open reel, valve amplifiers and film photography.

Surprise

But guys please, look on to this picture again.

What can be seen on the nice old Beovision 500 sitting on the BM3000?

My first association: In my childhood this sign has always meant  "Ohhh, it is very late, time to go to bed..."

But obviously not for this guy working on the BC5000 ... Not exactly best advertisement for the good old BC5000 and its serviceability ...
