Beoplay V1: True Image is only up-mixing 2.0 to 5.0, not 5.1. Why?!

Hi everybody

On my V1 i have connected 2x BL8000 (front), 2x BL6000 (rear) and one BL2 (sub)

Having set the sound-mix to 'True Image', i only get an 5.0 output signal from af stereo (2.0) input.

Why does it not let my beloved BL2 make some noise to support the BL8000 (or the built-in center for that matter)?

Mostly I watch television, and many channels only broadcast in stereo, but I bought the BL2 for a reason and not just because it looks nice.

On my old Avant i had the same speakers connected to the Dolby Digital module, and the BL2 always helped getting a rich, bassy sound, even watching the news... Now it's silent :-(

Can anybody explain - or even give me a solution?

Thanx!!

Jakob, Denmark :-)

Probably because there is no use for the BL2 with that content.

The other speakers can easily manage the bas content/amount of bass in the sound signal - after all a subwoofer isn't there 'to make some noice'.

How is/are the Speaker Group/s set up?

And how does the setup behave, when playing music (Spotify...)?

But we should better let Geoff explain that - if/when he sees the question Smile

The BL8000 can not manage the deep bass - not in my opinion... Cool By the way: That should be up to me to decide, not the TV.

I tried to change the connected speaker type to BL6000 or BL4000 with no change.

It behaves the same way when playing music from my AppleTV, no sound from BL2 Angry

I don't understand why the signal only is upmixed to 5.0 when I have specified the BL2 as connected. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

My speaker setup:

PL1 LEFT BL8000

PL1 RIGHT BL8000

PL2 LEFT BL6000

PL2 RIGHT BL6000

PL3 LEFT BL2

PL3 RIGHT BL2

Example:

Input: Dolby Digital 2.0    The output is still 5.0 (TRUE IMAGE)

Hi Jakob,

When you setup your inputs you also have to choose what role a speaker plays in your system. You have just written RIGHT/LEFT.

Im sure you already did it right but could you just check that you chose your BL2 as a SUBWOOFER, not right or left.

Cheers,

Hej Jakob,

A couple of questions / suggestions:

1. What Speaker Roles have you assigned to your loudspeakers? I would do the following:

  • BL8000: Left Front
  • BL8000: Right Front
  • BL6000: Left Surround
  • BL6000: Right Surround
  • BL2: Sub
  • BL2: Sub

Note that I have said Sub/Sub for your single BL2. Not Sub/None or Sub Left/Sub Right.

2. What Sound Mode are you using? Some Sound Modes have Bass Management defaulting to "OFF" in which case your True Image upmixer will upmix from 2.x to 5.x but if your Bass Management is off in upmixing mode, then the ".x" will be ".0". If you like the Sound Mode you are using, but you want to kick in the BL2, then you can just turn on Bass Management in the main Sound Mode edit menu and that should do the trick.

Try/check these two things, and if you're still getting nothing coming out of the sub, then get back to me and we'll try a couple of more things.

Cheers

Geoff, that did the job! :-D

The speaker roles are correct. I am using the USER Sound Mode, and the Bass Management was not activated. After activating it, the BL2 immediately woke up!

Now I am playing with the settings to optimize.

Thank you for the advice - I never would have guessed that the Bass Management would do the trick!

Why isn't Bass Management on as standard?

w5bno123:
Why isn't Bass Management on as standard?

Bass management factory-defaults to "ON" in some Sound Modes - to "OFF" in others. For example, it's on for MOVIE and GAMING modes, but off for CUSTOM (since it's designed in the factory default as a "purist" music mode). However, it can be overridden and saved as the default by the customer.

For more information, see the Technical Sound Guide, downloadable from (for example) this page

Note that the Technical Sound Guide is identical for the BeoPlay V1, the BeoVision 11, the BeoVision Avant, and the BeoSystem 4, although, due to hardware differences, some features covered in the Guide may not be applicable to a particular model of television.

Cheers
