Hello all,

I have just moved into a new house and it seems that it is wired up with the masterlink cables with a 7 pin din style connector  (in the bedroom and the lounge) and a some little round silver control panels (one in the bedroom one in the bathroom)with speakers in the bathroom ceiling.

I don't have any B & O equipment of my own and I am trying to work out how to use the speakers etc with my main source of music (iPhone with Spotify) so any advice on the products I need to buy to be able to use the speakers would be great.

Thanks in advance

Nick

If I read this correctly, the "only" B&O products that were left behind was a pair of speakers in the bathroom ?

You will probably find there is a hidden amplifier black box somewhere eg behind wall, in attic, cupboard ?

That is what will power the speakers.

Without the "black box" which is controlled over the master link and which accesses the sources you do not have a working system.

To check, is there a black box, and specifically any labels on the speakers ?

Perhaps a photo might help us recognise the type of your installation.

We will get onto sources and linkages to Spotify and iPhones in a later post.

And please do check, if there are one or more MasterLink cable/s (with a the plug) elsewhere in the house coming out of the wall - or as an outlet with connection/s for ML

Yes.

Because that's where their source system(s) would have been located.

PS we are not sure which of the many in wall speakers the previous owners could have placed in the walls ....

OK I have had a good look round, cant see a black box at all but I cant get into the loft at the moment (very high ceilings and a very small ladder).

I have taken photos of the connections I can find.

There is one in the lounge thats just a single masterlink, there a masterlink in the bedroom which has a 7 pin din style connector and a silver disc controller and then a single silver disk controller thing (which is powered) in the bathroom.

The ML in the lounge probably was for the audio- or video-system - the driver of the ML-system.

Where (the bedroom) you have the 7 pin and the ML connectors, they probably had an Active Link box, that is missing - the speakers are missing too :-(

See this picture: http://sound-affair.com/bang-olufsen-beolink/bang-olufsen-beolink-active

The ir sensor in the bathroom is powered - this might mean that the Active Box is still there somewhere (and that it/the box is connected to power).

Is that where the speakers are in the ceiling?

About 3 versions of BeoWorld ago I think I made a post about how I had jury-rigged a MasterLink cable to take input from a device and send it out on the wire - of course there were no controls just an audio signal.

So you just might be able to do something like that from the iPhone Spotify's output and inject it into the cable so that it plays in the bathroom.  The fact that the light was on indicates that something is alive somewhere !

Pity you don't have any friends to loan you a BeoSound for a more simple test.

Are you able to contact the previous owners to confirm what they left behind and what might still work ?

And any chance you can photograph the bathroom speakers ?

A BL converter 1611 as the driver might be enough to 'inject' an audio (line level) signal.

Still - it would be nice to know, if the op just intends to use the installation 'as it is', or if he is willing to invest a bit for better and easier functionality.

The speakers are in the ceiling in the bathroom, picture below

I would be willing to spend a bit of money to get music into the bathroom, would be a shame to let the speakers go to waste, but I am also handy with a soldering iron so might have a look around for the ML wiring layout.

What would I need to buy to get sound through to the speakers in the bathroom.

Thank you all for the help so far.

The speaker - to me at least - looks like the BeoVox1. But they normally don't have a broad ring around them. You should be able to see the Bang & Olusen name on a smaller ring.

If you could manage to remove the front, it would be much easier to see, if.....?

In case they are 'real', those are passive speakers, that are driven by a BeoLink Passive amp (probably hidden somewhere).

N.B. You don't need a soldering iron with the ML cables!

Best way to check if the installation/the speakers are useable, is to borrow a B&O BeoMaster.

A BM is the device, which 'rules', what 'is going on' in a ML-setup.

It must be a BeoMaster with a ML connector.

Just push the ML-plug - from the bedroom - into it and power it on. (Don't use the other cable/plug).

Then try to push the 'Play' button on the ir-eye in the bath to see what happens.

If no sound, first check, if the BeoMaster shows any reaction.

Having a B&O remote would make it easier to test.

Try pushing the Radio button and also try volumen up/down.

The ir-eye must react every time it receives a command - and the AudioMaster must turn on (with Radio as source).

No use investing anything or make any futher suggestions, ad long as you don't know if the installation is valid.
