The reason to use a reel to reel recorder must not be the sound.
For me it is also emotional

This example is a Beocord BC2400 by Bang & Olufsen.
My grandfather in Kolding south in Jyttland of Denmark,he owned a BC1000 mono machine.
The sound quality was fantastic for its time, but mono.
I dreamed of the higher stereo models.

My grandfather was a pianist, and his style of playing the grand piano was similary to this piece.

If you are curious about identifying different styles of Jazz piano, search "piano lesson oscar peterson" on youtube.

Both the grand piano and the Beocord was lost through classic herritage disagreement in our family, even though my father was the only one playing piano in the family tree under my grandfather - 5 generations of pianists.

It became wound in our family.

I had to get a BC2400, Bang & Olufsens top model. that was my way of dealing with my past

So... I found this pre-recorded tape. "Lush and Lyrical sounds of American arilines"
This tape has absolutly not a "good sound", the tape is stretched old and broken, but thats not the point,

It is journey for me to travel back to the 60th and the music my father and my grandfather listened to , and also played as musicians, together with how they listened to it...on a Bang and Olufsen Reel to Reel recorder.

Here a wonderful piece from that tape, a by Michel Le Grande and a piano style , not exactly but similar to how my grandfather played.

(Anyone curious about different styles of playing the piano type piano lesson Oscar Peterson on youtube. )

A Journey to a earlier time.

I have totally 7 reel to reel machines and they all have different memories for me.

Somewhere after New years eve, I will do a line-in recording to video to show the performance of the reocrding quality of this machine switching playback recoording, which is quite astonishing for this 47 year old machine

In general Reel to reel culture has grown very fast for me

I buy new manufactored tapes from french Pyral  and record music onto reels on general basis now

For me it is many things , more then emotional.

There are pre-recorded tapes that sound fantastic. old productions that are not mastered with low dynamic as today.

An old Beocord also produces lovevly heat, and when warm, a beautiful smell, that adds to the session.

The handling of the reels is almost like a ritual where you have to put in some effort for the recording and playback., this makes both the listening and the music more valuable, and I really focus more.
It becomes like sesssion, rather then the throw-away- culture mp3 have made music into

I also have a passion for magnetic tape recording, be it cassette or open reel.

I have five open reel machines, transistor and valve, the latest acquired being a Beocord 2400, as some of you may know. I am listening to it now on the full Beolab 5000 system. I like what I hear!

Sorry though, I won't be able to join the group, having no Facebook account nor willing to join either! But we're here, aren't we? Smile

I will be everywhere.

This page is still the heavy corner stone, and I hope it will continuie like that. , but the simple access to facebook, direct upload of an image from a mobile phone bu one push, makes a facebook a quick way to in spontninity to share things quickly

Downside with FB is of course all the integrity *** of NSA storing everything you do, say, type where you go..aso.

the sweet and sour life being on a mobile phone today...
