Avant settings

Hi,

If you own the new Avant, what, if any, settings have you tweaked?

I've read somewhere about turning judder off.  Have you done this or tweaked other values?

 

So far I've turned the backlight down slightly, judder off and colour up slightly.  Do you have any recommended settings?  Any advice is good!

The picture I've got is fantastic, but I'm no expert and if i can make it even better, then I'd love to try it.

I have the BV11-55 and has changed settings for all my inputs. Don't have all changes in front of me but the main settings that I've changed are as you say the judder off, I've also turned sharpness and enhancements down to 0. Finally I use the adaptive picture mode for TV, Movies for Home Media and Blu-Rays and Game for Playstation 4.

I was not impressed at all with my Avant's picture quality out of the box.  I found it cold and very bad at handling fast movement or panning.  The Judder reduction, noise reduction and all that stuff actually made the picture worse.  When I used the FlatpanelsHD calibration, I notice a marked improvement.  So give it a go.  The main thing is that you're happy with the picture.

I have the same TV as you. The only thing I have done is to take the Judder off. Some times i leave it on, im getting used to it, otherwise no other tweaking has been done is just adjusting with the picture modes.

I would go with FlatpanelsHD's (Avant) settings, too.

Lately, I've been using the settings in their BV11 review, except that I'm using the Adaptive picture mode, with color temperature set to 24, for everyday TV viewing. The lowered color temperature with Adaptive mode brings the picture a little closer to Movie mode's color temperature, but not quite as warm.

So if you find the Movie mode too warm (reddish), try FlatpanelsHD's settings together with Adaptive picture mode, and set the colour temperature a little lower from the default.

For blu-ray, I use FlatpanelsHD's exact settings.

Of course, you should ultimately settle for the settings that look best to your eyes. What looks good is always subjective and individual.

In any case, setting Sharpness, Contrast Enhancement and Noise Reduction to 0 is always a good starting point. That removes processing that usually brings most of the unwanted artefacts to the picture (especially for high quality sources). If you find regular TV picture too soft with Sharpness set to 0, try increasing it in increments of 8, i.e. 0 - 8 - 16 - 24 - 32 (32 is the default value).

It's also good to let your eyes get used to any settings you try (leave the settings on for a few hours / a day), instead of making adjustments too frequently. Your eyes might go nuts (meaning that it's hard to tell which settings actually look best).

i've followed the flatpanelHD calibration settings, with the exception of TV mode, where i've set the sharpness to 12, as most channels are SD and i felt this looked a bit soft.

The picture is now very good indeed.

You're right about your eyes going a bit nuts when you keep changing the settings though, it's difficult to know whats looking good and what isn't.  Wish i'd just followed the calibrated settings from the start.
