Hi
one of my beo lab penta speaker does not have sound, everything else works
can I have this repaired ? Local agent in hongkong refuses to do it as no spares
or can someone give step by step instructions on replacing amp with newer ice amps
thanks
Hi Shah
The Penta mk III is analog, and should be repaired. The older B&O did not have module replacement. The repair shop has to fault find using the schematic diagram, replacing capasitors, transisteros, resistor. etc. The problem is that most repair shops don't know how to do anymore, only replacing modules. Try to change channel setting (left or right) or change cable or change powerlink socket on penta and receiver. Remember to use a full mounted PL cable where all 8 wires are connected. Pin 1 is mute and pin 4 is power up, if both pins are not signal activated by the receiver, the loadspeaker will not start. In newer systems only pin 4 is used.

At the mk3 the pins 1 and 4 are shortened internally. So, a simple powerlinkcable will drive the amp without the feed of data for the displays.
I think a complete overhaul for (both) amps will be cheaper and keeps the Penta original and sounds better as the tweeter stays on its higher height.
Using ICE modules needs tinkering...
Hi Beobuddy
According to the scematic diagram they are NOT shortened internally. I had the MK III for 14 years. They only worked with full mounted PL cables. If Pin one is not activated, it will not start up.
I've had dozens of Penta's for repair, overhaul or upgrade...
There is a difference in what theoretically schematically drawn and what's done in practice.
You need the fully wired cables for working displays. The mk2 certainly needs the Pin1 and 4 activated.
At the picure below you can see that the trace coming from pin1 is disrupted. At the flatcableside is this trace shortened with the trace coming from pin 4.
This explains the difference in behaviour between the mk2 and mk3. With a mk2 the diplay will always be light up when the system is activated, For instance, used as a rear speaker the mk2 always shows the source, where the mk3 only lights up when the speaker is activated.
