How to compare these devices?

They are both appliances that are not equivalent to compare with each other. Both have a somewhat equal basis but are so different from one to another in use.

Simply stated it all depends what you want or is your desire, a screen who can control the complete music system or just a button + extra tablet.

I would say they are almost the same except for the Moment having a tablet as a user interface, where you have to use your own tablet with the Essence. Am I wrong?

Plus, Moment can stream to wireless speakers like Beolab 17/18/19 and Essence needs extra box for that.

I guess they are aimed at totally different markets. For someone like me who keeps everything on the iPhone, the Essence would be suited to me. The Moment is for the older armchair hifi enthusiast. I prefer the reliability of Apple software rather than B&O's rather unsuccessful approach to software. Plus the Moment costs more than a top flight MacBook Pro fully spec'd. Just my option but as I said, each one is aimed at a totally different spender.

BnO is about far more than software or content. The gestalt of the physical interface is essential. That makes the Moment more of a 'true & complete' BnO product, IMHO

PaulW, you make some very intriguing points. I keep a lot of my music on my iDevices, but my entire collection is spread across multiple Macs and a NAS (yeah, I know I'm going to have to centralize for a more seamless experience), but for me, what the Moment offers is twofold:

  1. The first was best described by the "use case" video posted a while back. I have a ton of music, but end up only listening to a small fraction of it. It'll help me discover new music in my own collection (hopefully).
  2. You mentioned you use your iPhone for music. Before I got my BV, I had an Airport Express connected to my receiver, so I was using my iPhone / iPad / MBPro, etc, all the time. I'd love to use a device which I don't have to wake up, and go to the Music app in order to do virtually anything. Although the days of the dedicated HiFi are essentially over (not talking about the true hi-fi enthusiasts here), the Moment, for me personally seems like the first modern desirable dedicated music access device. (And, if I'm not mistaken, you can control it with your iPhone as well -- BeoMusic, am I right?)

Finally, the fact that you mentioned the Moment is priced on par with an MBPro, yeah, I can't counter you there... what would I want more? A current MBPro vs a Moment (two different devices / different purposes, but both just as desirable)

Maybe we should wait trying to answer this question, untill the BS Essence 2nd Generation is released - and untill the 'multiroom-software-update' for the BS Moment is released.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
