Hello!

I just got my first piece of bang olufsen!

The bad news is that there is no sound. The guy selling it just took it down and says it was working fine.

The display on the Beolab shows source but doesnt show volume (see image).

There was no powerlink cable so I bought one from the local store, 5mm thick ( see image). I have been calling 3 bang olufsen stores, 2 of them says its the wrong cable and the right cable is 3mm thick. the other says 5mm is the right cable and instead there is something wrong with the speakers.

EDIT:

I get sound if I:

1. Connect the BL 3000 to BM 4500 via power link.

2. set BL in audio mode

3. power on the BM wich activates the display on the BL, but there is no sound and display on BL shows source and volume as MUTE symbol "_ _"

4. Disconnect the speakers main power from the wall socket and plug it in again.

5. No display at all but there is sound from the BM.

6. I can change volume, change radion channel but if I change source or something else the display om the BL wakes up and there is no sound again.

For Beolab 3000 you will need fully wired Powerlink cable. So, the thick one should be correct.

Does it have 8 pin DIN plugs?

You say, source will be displayed but no volume data?

And no sound coming through?

Are you sure, you plugged the cable into the Powerlink sockets (sorry!) ? AUX socket looks very similiar....

Are both BL3000s connected to the Beomaster ot are they daisy chained?

Do the Beolabs power on/down when you (de)activate your BM4500?

Thanks for your quick reply! :)

best to my knowledge there are 8 pins on the cable. I have to admit I dont have much of a clue when it comes to cables.

yes source will be displayed and change when I change on the BM4500.

No sound coming through. I have only tried the radio (there is no antenna if that matters) and the cassetteplayer. So I am not really sure if there is a signal coming in.

Yes I am quite sure it was the right socket.

Actually, I just have one powerlink cable for the moment som I connected the BL one at the time.

No I dont think the speakers reacted when I activated and reactivated the BM4500

I have now hidden the speakers and receiver under the bed away from my 13 month baby... :) I will put it together again tonight and test your last question to be sure.

Also check the BL3000's are set for 'audio' not 'video'.  You can daisy chain the speakers.  If yçu have any non-amplified speakers, try them in the DIN speaker outlets and see if you have sound.

Try the 'Mute' touchpad when you have the speakers connected in case the mute function has been activated.

OK, just now seen your picture and the 2 lines for volume mean the mute circuit is enabled.  Press the mute section of the control panel and you should hear the relay click and sound appear.

BL are set for audio, not video.

I have pressed mute several times. Mute appears on the BM4500 display but no relay click and no sound.

Does this happen when you try the other BL3000 speaker?

I think this is a muting issue.

I just ordered a "Minijack top beolab Line In (using Phoneo/RCA sockets) - one cable for two speakers" from soundsheavenly, just to see if the speakers are working.

Is the muting issue common?

is this the right setting?

I understand the Left and Right option on top. But what are the second switch about?

If the relay isn't clicking when pressing mute, it could be a faulty minijack output on the BM4500, that makes the speaker relay stay activated all the time. I had a very similar problem to yours on my BM4500, which turned out to be mechanical failure in the minijack output. Luckily I had a spare part lying around, but simply unplugging the minijack output in the BM4500 should also do the trick although I wouldn't advise you to start opening your BM if you're not quite sure, what you are doing.

On a little side note, you should be aware, that the tape holding the glass panels in place tends to dissolve over time, so if they haven't already been reattached, you should get taken care of that as well. Take a look here for further information.

The minijack output, is that the tiny socket on the front of the BM? So the minijack output thinks there are headphones plugged in and cuts out the speakers? Do I need special B&O headphones or can I plug in my iphone headphones and try is there is any output?

Thanks for the heads up about the glasspanels, I have that sorted before mounting it on the wall.

Yes, that's the one on the front. You don't need special B&O headphones - any with a standard 3,5 mm minijack plug should work, but I don't know if the iPhone headphones will work, since they have a remote control feature if I remember correctly and therefore a different type minijack plug with more connections.

I don't know how common a muting issue is.  All I know is that on my BM4500 if it is playing normally and the Beolab speaker display is complete, when I press 'mute' the volume number is replaced by the two horizontal lines as shown on your BL3000's.

What kind of set-up was the previous owner using?  Was it linked to a TV or any other equipment?  Do you have a remote for the system?

The second switch is related to the power output of the amp/TV used for the speakers.  In your case, as you are using Powerlink - not Speakerlink, you don't need to worry about it as it's overridden when Powerlink is used.

It isn't a speaker problem.  It is a BM4500 problem clearly.  You could try a 3.5mm jack in the headphone output and take it in and out a few times to see if it free's anything.

I have now checked and yes, the BL do react when I activate/deactivate the BM.

I have tried iphones headphones in the front minijack socket and there is sound from the radio.

Whats next?

Just to recap..

1. Connect your speakers to one(or both, depending on if you daisy-chain the speakers) powerlink sockets on the BM.

2. When the system is turned off, the BM and speakers should be in std.by.

3. When turning on the BM(no headprhones attached) and making sure the mute LED is OFF, what is the volume indicator on the speakers ?

4. Insert a set of headphones in to the minijack, does the BM relay make a sound when inserting/removing the headphones ?

5. Are there sound in the headphones when attached ?

6. If there are sound in the headphones, and no sound is heard from the mute relay when inserting, there is a problem with the minijack connector.

7. If the mute relay is clicking on/off when attaching/removing headphones, then the problem is elsewhere.

I have only one 8-DIN cable, which means one speaker connected at a time

2. When the system is turned off, the BM and speakers should be in std.by.

Yes

3. When turning on the BM(no headprhones attached) and making sure the mute LED is OFF, what is the volume indicator on the speakers ?

Volume indicator shows mute: " _ _ "

4. Insert a set of headphones in to the minijack, does the BM relay make a sound when inserting/removing the headphones ?

Yes, its the same sound as when I press MUTE

5. Are there sound in the headphones when attached ?

Yes

6. If there are sound in the headphones, and no sound is heard from the mute relay when inserting, there is a problem with the minijack connector.

7. If the mute relay is clicking on/off when attaching/removing headphones, then the problem is elsewhere.

Bummer.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

I aquired a 3,5mm to RCA cable and plugged my iphone directly to the Beolab. There is sound!

At least now I know the speakers are working.

Just catching up on this.

If the volume indicated on the Beolabs was "_ _" did you try turning the volume up on the Beomaster?

By now I hope you've solved your problem with your setup though.

Doh.

I see you did try to adjust the volume. Apologies.
