I just received and email from dealer entitled Bang & Olufsen & Sonos. Email includes an advertisement for a wireless Sonos system now available at the B and O store. Very surprising to me.

Ah, you know... A little B&O here, a little there
Razlaw:No, I did not think nor suggest it was a B and O thing. Merely stated that I had received the advertisement and was surprised by it.

StUrrock:Do you think it is because they cannot survive by selling B&O alone?
BeoBoy68: Of course, my dealer open a new corner with Sonos and Bose products.

Who is your dealer?
StUrrock:Who is your dealer?
So if Tue and cool guy Geoff are listening, B&O need to instantly hit the SONOS market. Not with the Moment etc but with a PLAY range that the Sonos market can truly afford - like smaller A8s etc. I see a lot of companies now compete with SONOS including Harman Kardon and Pioneer and last year BOSE with the 20/30 range. Exciting times :)
I also visited one of the five stores previously mentioned to look at an Essence for driving an old pair of Beolabs. The salesman suggested I look at the Sonos unit instead which was on display, and gave me a quick demo. It seemed more versatile and cheaper too.
So, outside of getting a nifty remote that makes you less reliant on your smart phone/iPad, does the Essence really have that much more to offer?

That really depends on how you want to use the device?
If the easy access for music, radio and volumen control does not matter to you, if Spotify Connect and/or AirPlay, if if the 'autosensitive' line-in connection, if the easy connection of BeoLabs of your own choice, if the integration into a B&O setup, if the possibility of have more than one music stream/Deezer at the time etc..... is not what you are interested in, the Sonos-thing should be fine.

kallasr:Well, i use Sonos and B&O, using the aux connection, and I really like the way you can control your music with the sonos ios apps. It is not either or, it is both... Ralf

Ralf
Does that mean, that you use a Sonos connected to the Essence?
If not, you have an 'either or setup'!
Connecting a Sonos to an Aux of an old audiomaster is not the same as using an Essence in a NL setup.
That said - if you are happy with Sonos/ML, it's fine!
But you can't really compare those.
kallasr:You are right, old Beosound 3000....
I am (still) using an even older audiomaster to 'inject' my Playmaker (and the line-in connected Squeezebox Touch) into my excisting ML-setup.
It works well so far!
But is not what Essence and NL can do - that is a step up in B&O-networking.
Razlaw:They are a long established B and O dealer. Part of a group of five B and O stores. Listed on the B and O web page.
beopaul: Razlaw: They are a long established B and O dealer. Part of a group of five B and O stores. Listed on the B and O web page. Not any more. They've changed their stores' names and no longer sell B&O. Rumor is that they were caught selling non-B&O products and so were kicked out of the dealer network. That leaves Minnesota and Denver without local dealers.

A new B and O dealer has opened in the Chicago area already.

BeoMegaMan:There is also a new dealer in Denver.
Good of B and O to so quickly get a new dealer in at least two cities following the loss of that city's dealer.

Sounds good, when you read about it and watch the video.
But what it actually does, we don't eeally know.
BeoLabs have had swiches for 'room corrections' for years - not to speak of the (now ten years old) room measurement tech built in to the BL5.
I expect coming (sound/speaker) technologies from B&O to do a bit more.
After all they have gained a lot of knowledge during the development of the automotive audio systems.
'Beam with control' and 'active room compensation' will be more 'sophisticated'.
