I recall reading several posts in which it was recommended that BL 5's be located about 3 ft. (1 m) from the "front" wall.  I'm interested in locating mine tight against the front wall.

Assuming that the ABC is run with the speakers in this position, how does the sound suffer in this position compared to locating the speakers 1 m from the front wall?

Other speakers in my system (BL 3 & BL 7-4) have switches to account for locating them at the front wall, implying they can be put there.  Why is the BL 5 different?

Because of its auto configuration through the microphone?

I wanted to replace my 9s with 5s. I had two in home demos of the 5s, one for several days. My conclusion was that while they sounded different than the 9s, I could not say they were better. I attributed it, possibly, to the fact that in my room the speakers are close to the wall, and one was in a corner.

If you read the technical paper on the new Beolab 90, you see that a wide dispersion sound field, which is what the Beolab 5s are designed around, works against precise inaging. By pulling the BL5s away from walls, around a meter, and toe the tweeters in slightly, you'll optimize them best for imaging.

Presumably, this philosophy would also apply to any speakers with the ALT then?  However, the fact that the (3) smaller ALT speakers I have also have settings for placement right at a wall.

On the other hand, the speakers with ALT are designed at the higher frequencies to provide 180 deg. wide sound field with very little sound to the rear of the speaker.  So why would closeness to the front wall matter with regard to imaging?

I see why it make sense for the BL90 to be away from the front wall as it designed to provide 360 deg. wide sound field at least at some settings.
