Hi, I inherited two P30s from my dad and only fired them up for the first time in 15 years. They look ok but both tweeters are clearly dead. I opened them up but cannot find any obvious problems. I have limited electronical experience so don't want to fiddle too much without advice. Please help. Henry.

I think P30s share a tweeter with M70s and P45s (I have a pair of each). The voice coil lead attachment to the terminal is very delicate. I have seen it break when the terminal is twisted. That failure mode is repairable (I've done it).

On the other hand, a failure in the crossover could also be the problem.

The P30 is a wonderful, overlooked little speaker. I wish I had a place to hook mine up. Definitely worth putting some time into fixing if you want a wall mounted speaker.

Where are you located?

I have a few good used tweeters in the drawer if repairs fail.

Well, then it wouldn't be practical for you to send them to me in the USA to try to fix them.  Go ahead and buy from Martin.  You won't be disappointed.  Replace the capacitors in the crossover while you're in there.  Martin can probably help there also.

A first step in checking the driver, if you have an ohmmeter, is measure the drivers' DC resistance.  The DC resistance should be around 4 ohms.  If the terminal leads are broken, you won't be able to measure (or it will be infinite, I suppose).

It really isn't all that hard to fix a loudspeaker.  You basically just take it apart and put it back together, replacing any defective component along the way.  Here are a couple threads to give you an idea.
