My Beogram 8000 turntable simply stopped functioning. Pressing the play button causes a few dots to appear on the RPM speed display and also the led on the arm to flicker. The platter does not turn and none of the other buttons operate. One day it was working perfectly and now the next it is DOA. Any ideas on what may be the cause of the problem?
Yes...and welcome to Beoworld. That is a very nice turntable but it is at least thirty-three years old now (if not older). The Beogram 8000 and 8002 turntables are overdue for some restoration if they have never been worked on. Things like electrolytic capacitors, connector solder joints, some lubrication and so forth. Plus, on the Beogram 8000, there is also a plastic tachodisc for detecting and controlling the speed. By now the majority of the Beogram 8000 turntables have deteriorating tachodiscs. Fortunately you can get new, metal tachodiscs to replace them. Along with that I would recommend a complete check up and restoration. If you invest in a restoration the turntable will easily last you another thirty plus years of service.Check out this restoration thread for an idea of what is involved. I wouldn't recommend attempting the restoration yourself unless you have the desire to really learn what makes these turntables tick and plan on restoring more of them. It takes quite an investment in equipment and time. The best solution is to find a qualified person that has done these type of restorations near you and have them do the repairs. There are quite a number of Beogram 8000 owners and repair type people on this forum so don't be afraid to ask for help.-sonavor
