Hello,

I have seen a Beogram 3000 Thorens for sale in Denmark, should be in good condition and functioning as it should, but the pick up is not working.

I know that this model is rare, but how much may i pay for such a nice turntable, and is it hard to find?

Thank you in advance for your help.

As you will be aware, this is a relatively scarce model to find - especially in good condition.  You may pay as much as you think is appropriate for one in the condition you mention.  Restoration/repair is possible.  They are hard to find.

The Thorens TD124 alone on which the BG3000 is based will cost at least 800 - 1000 € minimum these days.  I've seen some sell for over 2000 € even unrestored.  As a guide, this is mine which was fully restored by Classic Audio and cabinet/plinth made in Oak to order and a new TT cover (not shown) and cost around 1900 € including delivery and a restored/retipped SP14 cartridge (+2 spares actually), with calibration and restoration booklet and certificates.  It is flawless and sounds wonderful.

It's worth every single Centime.

What is the price of the one you have found?  Is it a pickup/cartridge problem, tonearm wiring or just the stylus?

Dave.

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for your help.

It is the whole pick up, the tonearm is ok.

The price is 6500 DKR (£675).

You can see it on this link:

Now you've posted the link - someone else will probably snap it up.  I'd get it quick.  It's dusty and a couple of rubs to the enamel but it looks complete. The cartridge can easily be replaced.  A good clean and lubrication will help or better still, send it to Frede to restore.

Dave.

Yours looks absolutely superb, Dave. I love the look of oak, especially when it has been professionally machined.

Thanks Graham.

And just to show what some TD124's are like:

No tonearm either!  No case.

Dave.

When I saw Dave's superbly restored Beogram 3000 - it looks new - I knew I had to have one. It is a joy to behold and listen to! And no ubiquitous SME here!

I always lusted after an SME arm because of reputation and also how it looks.  However, I doubt that I'd be able to notice any sound improvement over the arm and cart on my BG3000.  It's pin sharp, crystal clear, highly detailed and there are no crackles, pops etc.  It's like being in a concert hall.

Jacques, maybe you can buy the one listed?  I'd save up for a Frede restored one as you can specify the wood type etc to match your system.

Dave.

Yes, I think I'll save up and get one from Frede. Plenty of time to choose the colour!

In the meantime, my Beogram 4000/20CL are giving sterling service, but this you already know Dave.

Hello,

Lovely to see these nice Beograms...!

Last week I aquired my first Beogram 3000 type 5210.

I have since long a beomaster+beolab 5000 and bevox 5000+2500 that will accompany the player.

Now, if I want to have a nice listening experience - which pickup should I use? I got myself an unplayed SP12 the other day from ebay.de but after reading a bit it seems to me that it might be too light for the tone arm?

Right now there are a gold SP6-7 mounted. It sounds very good - are the newer versions as good?

Can anyone help me out here and suggest a good pickup?

Thank You,

Simon

The best original cartridge to get is the SP8/9 - this had an elliptical stylus. However you could have a custom cartridge made - I have the 12" arm on my 3000 and this normally takes an SP2. Frede at Classic Audio commissioned Axel to make a special cartridge for me and this is superb. You can contact Axel at https://www.schallplattennadeln.de/

The TD124 mkII is a wonderful deck - the bass is far more extended than any of the more common Beograms and it is a delight to use. It is however completely manual! Bu you have to clean the record each time so that is no real problem in my view!
