Hi everyone,

I'm very tempted into buying a Beovision 8-40 MK2. I'm quit new to B&O. Besides a few Beoplay products I have (A9, Lit15, H8), I never experienced B&O televisions besides checking them out in store.

I know a lot of people don't like the design of the 8, however in some way it grew on me. Is there any reason (besides form factor) why you wouldn't buy the 8-40 MK2?

Kind regards,

Roy

Hi Roy,

I don't see any reason not to.

I have a BV8-40 MK1 myself, which has served me well.

I see that you have the A9 - if that is the 2nd gen A9, the only reason should be to go for a NL-based tv instead.

Either a V1-40 or the soon to come new tv (rumoured BVHorizon).

However, if you don't want to (or can) network the devices, you should be fine with the BV8-40.

MM

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Great picture, fantastic sound and some very clever stand options.

Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.

Check whether it has optional features.

We have had our -40 since 2012 and -32 since 2009.

The -40 is daily use and as Chris said has a great centre speaker.

It is setup with surround sound.

The -32 is now used as a computer / video conversion monitor.

To connect our BVs with the Essence (or other NL products, an A9 in your case) we use a BeoLink NL/ML converter.

If you are thinking of expanding over time then I would skip the BV8 as MM suggested and go for a V1.

I bought my BV8-40 only a couple of months before the V1 came out.

If I had listened to rumours and waited I may not have needed the converter :)

So please read the thread "New BEOVSION" so you make the decision fully informed with facts AND rumours :D

I've got a 8-40 since 2008 and still very happy with it.

Make sure to get the PUC you need. For example, I have the control of my latest gen Apple TV with the Beoremote One (I've switched from Beo4 to BR1 since there was a very good exchange promotion at my dealer), which makes the BV8 a very up-to-date connected TV ;-)

I've also added the Blink Converter NL/ML and get synchronized sound fro the TV to my A9 mk2...

The new BV will surely be better, but surely at more than 3k€...

I can't see if anyone has mentioned it before, but ensure it has the ML module. Years ago when I purchased an 8-32 here in the states, I think the ML module was an add on. Perhaps it became standard after the Mk1's were discontinued.

Yes that is what I meant by options.

Also I believe the DTV tuner is an option.

Not sure if the OP has read the thread I recommended ... however Hiort's summary would poison this new BV as the successor to the V1 and the BV8.

And the rumoured price point makes it competitive with a 2nd hand / life BV8.

Once it's announced V1 and BV8 prices might drop !

Beovision Horizon. A 40" is around 30,000 Swedish (Kr) and the 48" is around 40,000 (kr). Brand new design. Looks like "no TV I have seen before". Harder, more masculine/aggressive design, with more pronounced edges and angles. Matte black aluminium frame. Static (no moving parts) sound bar at the bottom, integrated in the design, with a grey aluminium grille. No glass in front of the panel. 4K and HDR. 40" and 48". The most exciting about this TV is the price, which by B&O standards will be low. Around 3200 and 4000 euro, respectively. Two floor stands: one has wheels. The other resembles the floor stand of the Avant, at least in function, but will be black and look more like a set of circular rails rather than a solid disc. Android powered. Bluetooth for remote.

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the replies. I'm a fan of this forum, and practically follow every topic in here, I'm not a replier myself though. I saw the post about the new BV. In the end it will definitely be my television in the living room. However for now I have a great offer of 900 euros for a BV 8-40 MK2. So that made me think and leave me in doubt.

The seller is offering me this BV and the following add ons:

  • Masterlink for 75 euros. I have no idea where I would use that for? Is it only to expand my network of speakers? Since that won't happen with this tv as it will end up in the bedroom after the horizon came out.
  • PUC flash for 50 euros. Is PUC necessary on the remote or on the BV? Since I would love a BeoRemote One. In case it is on the remote I'll wait and let it be flashed by my dealer. What is a regular price for doing that?
  • I think I prefer the floor stand. What would your advice be in stand options?

Thanks everyone for your help! Really appreciate it. I believe I'll buy a BV today ;-).

Roy

I just have two shelf / floor stands. They rock in that they allow you to slightly angle the screen up and down.

For the PUC you need to look at what devices you will add via the HDMIs.

Each HDMI can have a PUC associated with it.

This means for me that I can control my Foxtel/Sky set top box via my Beo4. No need for the fancy FOXTEL remote.

Similarly I control the Apple TV "set top" box the same way. No need for the old silver Apple remote.

I do use the new Apple remote for the Siri commands.

The advantage of the OUC system is all the set top boxes are inside a cupboard out of sight.

There is no need for infrared line of sight.

For each device you will need its unique B&O to infrared translation table / code.

You are being offered a good deal - just make sure your devices are in the list.

You do not need the ML to attach speakers. It is only for linking to speakers in other rooms or other old beovisions or old beomasters or old beosounds.

Always loved the design of the BV8 televisions with the 40" model being my preference. The sound is fantastic. Given that the rumoured Horizon tv is on its way though, personally I would wait to consider the options. BV8s are plentiful on the second hand market and there is no need to rush to buy anytime soon, even with the deal offered. Just my opinion. Enjoy the hunt and eventual purchase whatever that might be.

B&O products are V1-32, BS2, H95, E8 and an Essence remote.
11-46 now replaced with Sony A90J 65”, Sony HT-A9, Sony UBP-X800M2 and Sony SRS-NS7.

Not a big fan of the speaker sticking out at the bottom of the Beovision 8 but when put on a thin horizontal piece of furniture it looks good http://www.diisign.com/2009/12/test-bang-olufsen-beovision-8-40/

as shown here.

Not much good bolted to a wall bracket though?

It reminds me of a cash machine but if you can install it in a way you like it's great performance for the price.

There is no reason not to buy a BV8

It was the first BV to be introduced at a relatively attractive price point and the speaker "pit" was revolutionary as was the soft touch plastics and it had HMDI!

The Sony TV in monolith design i had later was the same, and must have drawn on from the BV design in that the stand which was a 2.1 stand, was effectively the same as the BV8.

The BV8 is an absolutely beautiful television and if you're new to BV, im sure you will thoroughly enjoy it.

Looks great in your installation. The ATM look is not there because it's black on the black unit.

It's a convenient ledge for remotes and sticky fingers

Looks great Roy !

Welcome to the world of B&O experiments and pushing the limits ...

Perhaps you can even get a PowerLink out cable that can input to the A9 ?

What "set top box" devices have you got?

- blue ray

- cable

- Apple TV

- Google Chromecast

Did you set up any PUCs ?

See my configuration setup below

Much easier if your phone is iOS based and you have the BeoWorld iApp !

It's type, point, click, and post ...

Hi Elephant,

Thanks! I have a CI+ in it, an Apple tv 4 and my partner owns a X-Box. I'm currently thinking if I want to buy a floorstand. What do you think?

The sound and picture quality keep surprising me. Awesome TV! And I'm carefully checking some speakers on the internet as we speak.

Roy.

So do you have the ATV4 connected via a PUC cable ? I agree it's non-essential as the ATV4 is controlled via Bluetooth so you can like me hide it one of the cupboards in the credenza or even bind the books.

rvdv:

Floor stand

I was never convinced the the floor stand looked robust and stable in the B&O brochures. Also it looked industrial and not a match to the BV imho.

I think it looks great on your credenza.

My vote is don't fix what's already cool.

Unless you are after viewing height in which case why not wall mounted?

Sure the speaker is the angled down but I don't think the voice centre channel will be impacted.

And you've lost the remote shelf Big Smile but it's no biggy.

rvdv:

speakers

I have used BL3s.

Then BL3s with BL11.

Then BL3s with BL19 - this is the best combo I have had.

And BL4s for rears.

I did try BL4s for the front but in the family room's dimensions they were not powerful enough.
