Hello,

I have just bought a pair of older Beolab 8000 Mk. I load speakers, which probably have seen their hay days. At least I don't know much about them, and how they have been used.

I am using them together with a Beosound 3000 and the speakers are connected with a 5m and 8m cable respectively, rolled up as the speakers are only standing less than 1m from the Beosound. Those were the only cables they came with, but they are original B&O cables.

They actually play fine and give a fair sound, but I have noticed this kind of white noise coming from both of them, when the LED is flashing green. It is quite faint, but when you have learned to notice it, you pay attention to it.

As far as I can hear it only comes from the second speaker head counting from the bottom, and it is the same on both speakers. I have also tried to pause the CD and then crank up the volume, but the noise do not increase in magnitude, but stays the same.

I am a novice with these things, so can anybody help me out? Is this normal on the Beolab 8000 Mk.1?

Cheers,

Christian :)

A slight noise like you describes is usual from beolabs. I have a pair of bl8000 that started to hum loudly after being on for an hour and that requires new electronics. But the slight noise you are describing is audible on all my beolabs.

This 'slight noise' is indeed normal on (i guess all model) Beolabs.
The sound is best hearable from the tweater (because the tone is a high frequence tone).
It is always present, but only hearable when no music is playing and the Beolabs are on (so not in standby).

Is is there because the Beolab internal amplifiers are on and the amplification is always on the maximum 'volume' (because you control the volume on the source and not on the speakers). So it makes no difference if you connect them using the (rca) line-in or the powerlink connections.

Most people can't hear this 'white noise' if your ears are further than 10 - 20 inches / 25 - 50 centimeters away from the speaker.

I guess this doesn't influence the sound quality of the Beolabs, but I've always find it disturbing when I'm close to the speakers (I have quite good hearing, so I can hear it from bigger distances)

I hear it on my own BL6000's and BL8000 mkII's but also on my parents BL8000's mkI's and BL3's...

But to be honest, you can't hear it when listening to music on normal distances, so I guess this is just like it is suppposed to be.
