"You think we can slap some oak on this thing?"
I think you'll be disappointed by the sound of the 8000s . . . .
I've both in my setup: The 8000s as front and the Pentas in the back. In this combination the 8000s are louder than the pentas but Level 54 to 56 on the BS 9000 was not a problem - the 8000s began to scream - not nice - but the pentas are only loud and brilliant ;-)
I don't know which level you want to hear, but the sound of louder 8000s let's you automatically reduce the volume ;-)
I think they can go louder than your ears could withstand.
Given the STK chip amp in the Beolab 8000 is rated for 100W RMS, probably half that before distortion gets nasty. They're pretty loud but not high SPL stuff.
The newer ones with ICE power amps are much more powerful (on paper).
Of course any loudspeaker driver can be driven hard until roasted!
Leo, if you are frightened of blowing speakers up there's a simple setup:- Beolink Passive- Klipsch La Scala or the KlipschornThe "La Scala" and the "Klipschorn" both look ugly to me, but with a 20W valve amplifier it is simply unbelievable what comes out of these speakers and I mean unbelievable! There's only one thing you have to be scared to blow up: Your house! I'm not exaggerating. I've listened to both of them and it's very very seldom that a bassdrum kicks directly into my stomach. Never had this with speakers before at that level.
You need a big room to drive them like they deserve and if you are in the mood of e.g. listening to a rock concert at its original volume level: No Problem, just go for it. These speakers handle it with ease and don't show any sign of struggling while producing awestruck power levels. You love classic music, too? Enjoy every concert with its original dynamic levels without compromise. But having 2 La Scalas in your living room is nearly as putting 2 washing machines into the room. The Klipschorn has to be installed in the room corner due to its construction, but it can fit very good by painting the front the same color like the wall.
