This speaker is designed for devices with 3.5mm output socket, but I am interested in how it perform with CDPs or DACs. If I use RCA-3.5 cables to connect a CDP and Beolab4 PC, can it perform well? And how to control the volume without a PC?

Not worth the effort. Lousy speakers.

"Lousy speakers" is a bit harsh (IMHO).  Relative to the other BeoLabs, they are not great.  However, in the right environment (smaller room, not pushed hard), they sound quite good to my ears.  I thought they sounded horrible in the showroom, but now I think they are great (for the size and within their limitations) in my bedroom, for my style of bedroom listening (no dance parties or head-banging).

If they sounded horrible in the store, why did I buy?  I got a very good price (demo with stands included, also easy to return if I didn't like) and, they fit where no other BL would.  This is all about the BL4, not the BL4 PC, which is essentially the same speaker with different connection options.

Anyway, like all BLs, to control the volume, they need a source with a variable output... so either a pre-amp or a DAC with a variable analog output.  These are not "high end" so I wouldn't spend a ton of money on a high end source.

I knew a few friends who had them. Everyone has had failed amps in them and they are quite expensive for what they are and limited in quality. Sure for smaller rooms they might work. The PC edition won't work like regular beolabs though. It's not the best hardware design from B&O.
