I have a beoport connected to passive speakers via a beolink passive amp. It works without any problem. Now I want to use a pair of beolab 4 (ice power) with this beoport but there's a permanent hum background noise with powerlink mk1, 2 or 3.

Has somebody an explanation and a solution ?

Wellcome to the forum, TVigier !

Explanation :
At  BeoPorts serial # lower than 94247595 Pin 7 is not connected to anything inside the BeoPort

Solution:
Connect Pin 7 to Pin 2 (make a jumper) - either in the BeoPort or externally in your PL-Splitter

Serial N° of  the Beolink PC2 is 942431--   So I've got the explanation.

Many thanks.

Interesting Sad

Mine is 942428-- which explains some issues I used to have when I attached speakers - but I don't any more Smile

I also was "suspicious" that label never said "BeoPort" but rather "Beolink PC2"

It has an item (part?) number 1167566

During 2005 "BeoLink PC2"  has been renamed to "BeoPort" -  all item #  for all markets remained the same.
(eg 1167566 for the AUS 240V version)

If pin 7 (the blue wire in a PL MK3 cable) is not connected there is no data reference ground -  the result is hum on
ice powered BeoLabs.

As long as it was only a rename I am happy.  At the time, if you recall (like I do Smile), there was discussion on Beoworld that there was an improved variant (faster chip) that was the cause for the rename ... hence my suspicion/disappointment which has never eventuated into any real issue othe than perhaps ........

........... when I was in Newcastle I used the "BeoPort" with the speakers I bought from the Gray Street shop (best location, best layout, great service, great events) and the dealer and I struggled with the hum I could hear - we tried swapping power link cables, and different marks made a difference, but I don't believe that they made the change you recommend.

The Beolab 3s hummed far more than the Beolab 4s I bought in my second year in Newcastle.

Now days back in AUS the "BeoPort" is a true black box Laughing as it has no speakers attached (music is delivered wirelessly to BL4s or via ML to the BVs) and so the issue has disappeared.

Very likely there were small changes - suppliers discontinue componets and forcing manufacturers to adapt their units to these
new components.

"Danke für die Blumen" as we say in German - but the workaround is not my own finding, it's simply an official B&O tech-info released
mid 2006 to solve this "hum issue" .

Those days only BeoLab 3s and BeoLab 4s caused this problem, today all recent active speakers require this modification  to be done
on old BeoLink PC2 / BeoPort units.

I've got the old version --- meaining that I get the humming when connecting my Beolab 4s via Powerlink. Can anyone please explain how I do the trick with connecting pin 2 and 7?

Thanks...

... using a soldering iron with an appropriate (small) tip you'll have to connect pin 2 and 7 on the DIN socket
inside the BeoPort by a short piece of wire ...  (you can "abuse" a piece of a small paper-clip to make this jumper)

Big Smile  If you have the approptiate tools and skills it's an easy DIY job, if not, consult a technician ...
