Hey gang,

I got a used Beocord 9000 off eBay, replaced the belts, and fell in love with it. I'd never heard tape sound so good, and much more solid than any of my other decks. Gradually, now, though, I have a problem with it that is getting increasingly worse to now where it virtually unusable.  It plays great for about 5-10 minutes and then develops a funky harmonic distortion. I don't know where to begin. I've cleaned the tape head it self. Should I open it up and recap the boards? Or is it some sort of calibration issue that has developed? Any guidance with this will be very much appreciated.

Thanks ya'll.

Jeremy

Hi, and welcome to the Beoworld forum.

The Beocord 9000 is a great cassette deck. It is has a lot of automated features so it is pretty complex electronically. If it has never been restored then you have to expect it is due for some service by now. It is at least thirty years old. I have bought quite a number of these cassette decks off Ebay and have yet to come across one that was perfect. The mechanical part is always the first place I start looking. Especially when you start having the type of problems you are experiencing. There still could be a problem with the electronics but get the mechanical part restored first. Even though you replaced the two belts there are four other critical rubber wheels that need replacing. The belts also need to be correct. I always buy my Beocord belts and rubber wheels from Martin (Dillen here on the forum). Here is a link to one of my early Beocord 9000 restorations. I have improved some of my technique since then but it shows a lot about the scope of the work that could be involved.

Odd. Everything was disabled, and not by myself. Mmm…

Anyway, done!
