I hooked up my Beolab Penta 2 speakers to my BS5000. I just used 2 pin DIN connectors tied to the speaker outputs on the BM but I have a buzz for a few seconds when I turn the system off or hit mute. It goes away when the speakers auto turn off. Otherwise, everything is just fine and noise free. The Penta owner’s manual says you could use shielded 2, 3, or 4 pin DIN connections. So my question is how are you to wire a 2 pin DIN connector with shielded speaker wires? Do you terminate shield to the chassis of the BM and leave floating at the far end?

Hi Dom,

Your best option here is to use 4 pin Speakerlink cables as these are fully shielded to prevent the noise issues - they will also get the Penta displays working!

Kind regards, Steve.

Thanks Steve, I was more curious on how the shielded two pin connection was terminated when using a non B&O system.

Afraid I have no idea on this specific thing, but when making up standard RCA terminated interconnects for line level signals, the procedure used was to make a quasi-balanced cable by using a twisted pair for the signal, gnd and hot, with a braided shield over both wires. The shield braid was usually attached to the gnd wire at the end that plugged into the sourcing component, say a preamp, and left unattached to the gnd wire at the other end, usually at the amp, for a preamp/amp connection. On unbalanced RCA plugs, the outside of the plug is usually considered ground, and is connected to the chassis ground of the component, aka the metal case for most setups.

I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus. Sad

Ok, so it was easy. You just tie the shield to the negative wire at both ends. Now, no hum after shutting off or muting the speakers.
