Hi MBDJ nowadays I personally won't recommend a desktop - have you thought of either the amazing MacBook Pro or MacBook Air laptop? Having the freedom of movement with a laptop is simply terrific. We don't even use desktops in my work environment anymore. Why be stuck to a desk and office if you can be more creative in an espresso bar with your laptop and iPhone?

Do check out these simply adorable laptops. I'm totally sure that you will be thrilled and experience the IT world in a totally different perspective  :)

I'd say it depends on your needs. Are you going to use it for surfing the web, doing work, as a media centre or little of it all??

I have an 27" iMac as my primary computer. I absolutely love this because of the screen size and the huge resolution. After I got that I rarely use my 15" MacBook Pro, other than when away from home. I also have a MacMini, but this serves solely as the media hub for my AppleTVs, and as a TV Recorder, it's not even connected to a screen, I access this remotely. The only thing connected to my BV9 is my AppleTV. I would't like to have my primary computer connected to my tv, as the seating position in front of a tv is not ideal for normal computer use, such as writing mails, documents, spreadsheets etc.

if soley to be used as a media player go for the MacMini.........occasional couch-internet surfing ok to use the BV9 as a screen but not really that good.....iMac is really the best for that scenario......i don't think there is a HDMI out on iMacs - are there?

I love my BV9 and Mini set-up running PLEX as my media-player.....doesn't get much better than that

Really impressed with our office Mac Minis. They run cool and you almost never hear the fan. We installed SSDs in our Mac Minis, which helps. Mac Mini is recommended as it's small, neat and, if you get the quad-core, is more than enough for most people. We ditched our old 27" iMacs and swapped for quad-core Mac Minis with 27" Cinema Displays. Not really looked back. Was a good move.

Of its your sole computer a mac mini on your tv is cool but it's also a bit too much. Speaking from experience I ran a mac mini on a 55 inch tv. Although great, I didn't like it in the end. I would buy another iMac but I'm waiting to see if they refresh the iMac over the next couple of months.

Paul W makes a good point. Why not a MacBook ? You could integrate with your tv via a henge dock and that gives you the best of both worlds.

But if you need a large HDD iMac is a good bet.
