Hi,

I have a Bang & Olufsen BeoVox Cona subwoofer that I would like to use. The subwoofer is 6ohms (6ow), has 2 in connection and 2 out for 2 bookshelf (CX50 or CX100).

I have a class D amplifier rated (8ohms x 50w 2 channel) + 2 bookshelf 8 ohms x 50 w

I would like to add the sub the existing system. The 2 output from the amp (8 ohms) should go into the passive subwoofer (6 ohms) then the 2 output of the subwoofer (6 ohms) to the 2 bookshelf (8 ohms).

My question:

is that possible ? the fact that the amp and the bookshelf is 8 ohms compared to the passive subwoofer 6 ohms  will affect the system ? burn the amp or the sub. Please see attached picture.

What about the sound quality ?

thank you

Hi and welcome to Beoworld

The amplifier will work together with the Sub, no problem. I had such a combination for many years (Class D from icepower and also from Tripath).

Your bookshelfs will also play together with the cona without burning.

Sound Quality is another question because the cona was made for the very small CX50 / CX100 and has a rather high crossover frequency of 175 Hz.

Whether the difference from 6 Ohms of the CX's to the 8 Ohms of your Bookshelfs affects the quality is something i don't know. I suggest you just try it.

My current System with two conas and two beovox 3000 Panels is also driven by CLass D amps and works very nice.

Good luck

David

thanks a lot for the reply. I actually try it, and as you said it works fine. Sound quality is not the best. I found the cona beautiful but weak. I'm thinking to replace the speaker inside with another one stronger. I bought a harman kardon hkts200. it is 200 w amplified subwoofer. I will use the cona box to put the harman kardon hkts200  amplifier and subwoofer and test it. what do you think ?

Why? The box of the cona is designed for the present speaker and not for the HK one - sub woofers are designed on the whole to be out of sight and transplanting is unlikely to improve the sound of the HK. Obviously it is your equipment to do with as you wish but B&O have a huge testing facility to fine tune products and no doubt so does HK. It is not simply a case of bunging any speaker in any box.

Thanks Peter, you are right, I actually want to keep it as it is but I'm still disappointed with the sound. well, I will first try it in a different installation and keep you update.

The problem is that it is just not a very good sub woofer. It is really designed to add the upper bass to the CX50 and hence the high cross over frequency. It does that adequately but it isn't really a sub woofer - more of a woofer!! I can understand the sentiment though! It looks quite nice!

You are using the Cona for something it is not designed for.
It is like taking a ferrari for off roading.

Buy yourself a set of good CX50 or CX100 and let that Cona sing. You will be surprised!

that was my plan, for now I did not find a god pair of cx50, i found some but they need some reparation. as soon as I get the cona tested with cx50. I will let you know. Thank you anyway for your suggestion. I really need it to know, if it is deserve to spend money and buy the cx50. thanks
