How do the two match up seeing as they are in the same price category?
The Sonos is "limited" to CD quality (at least, that's what I understood...)
No Chromecast support --> no possibilities to join a B&O product
No Powerlink sockets
Not controlled by a B&O remote...
The Sonos has an amp built-in (for connectin passive speakers), the Core needs active speakers/BeoLabs.
Apart from that those are two different multiroom concept - so it depends on what you need it for.
As for ‘sound quality’: that would be hard to compare....too many variables - and specs definitely does not tell the whole story.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Beosound essence remote. BeoRemote one is not yet implement to core sw update.
To throw another option into the mix, I use a NAIM 272 streamer connected directly to my speakers (the NAIM streamer has a pre-amp out with excellent analog volume control). YMMV but to me, there is an audible quality improvement when streaming with the 272.
If You buy an Auralic Mini (price almost equal to the Core and Sonos) you will get a very good streamer with very good sound quality.

Aussie Michael:What remote can you control it with ? BR1 ?
Hi Michael,
if you speak about the Sonos, with the Sonos remote I presume
NB: I don't know if you can control something not B&O with the BR1...
Let me throw the Bluesound Node 2 in the mix as well which I have in our bedroom connected to Ruark Mr1 MK2 speakers. Monthly recurring updates, has Deezer Hifi, Tidal Hifi and many others (including ability to stream MQA).
Have the Bluesound as a backup for my Moment (to connect to my Almando switch when necessary)

I still have my good old Squeezebox Touch controlled by the iPeng app (on iPad)
(I’ve had the Touch long before the concept of the Essence/Core was born)
It is nowadays connected to the line-in of my Essence box....and (the sound of it) can therefore be distributed over my NL.
I don’t use it very often anymore, but won’t let it go (access to my NAS collection, Spotify and netradio).
If you don’t need the NL-functionallity of the Core, don’t want the B&O X app as a controller and you aim at a standalone setup, there are lots of other possibilities on the market.....from resonably to insanely high priced!
With the Core you get AirPlay, ChromecastAudio and bluetooth - something, that the Sonos can’t bring on its own.
The concept of the Core is versatility - it can be used in different situations/user cases, with different preferences (and in a NL-setup, if you want to).
Not everyone need all these functionalities - if you have a specific preference, there are lots of alternatives out there. Some people are happy with a ChromeCast Audio dongle (with the right settings).
Thanks for your help.
In theory, I like what the Core offers a lot, but I am worried that it will be plagued by the kind of software problems that have been present in a lot of B and O products recently (moment, essence...) whereas sonos is far less prone to connectivity/software related issues.

I can vouch for this. My friend has one, it's a superb product and has been trouble free. If/when my Playmaker goes belly up, this is what I'll replace it with.
Jeff
I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
Is there away to use this with 1656 amp.
And how?

This should be possible with the core as this is how I use my BS Essence connected with and RJ45 to powerlink (from Soundheavenly) into the amp and this then drives a pair of Beovox 1 in the bathroom. Works very well
Did you mean use the Auralic???
