Hi

I recently purchased a pair of cheap BeoLab 5000. Previous owner was smoking and so the speakers smell and I find them partly yellow both inside and outside. Do you have any tip on how to handle them so I can take them inside the house?

Best regards

PS: The magic smoke should however stay inside though... Wink

An inexpensive and one effective way of treating nicotine stains and smell is with white vinegar. White vinegar neutralizes nasty odors. The trick with your loudspeakers and their fabric covering will be how to use the white vinegar without causing any harm or destruction. Might be good to first of all test a small surface first in an area not visible to the eye. Start by adding warmed vinegar to a spray bottle. Dilute using a one-to-one ratio with warm water for less noticeable stains. Use full force vinegar if the stains and smell are really bad. Apply the warmed vinegar or mixture directly to the surfaces with a no abrasive cloth . Because tar and nicotine develop a sticky and hardened surface, the warmth of the vinegar helps to soften these substances. Vinegar removes both smells and stains from most things. You may have to do this a couple of times. Again, I would go about doing this very cautiously and perhaps wait until you receive some better suggestions from the Beoworld posts. --- Best of luck to you!

I have had 3 pairs of 4500's and the way I clean them are by removing the frame with the fabric on. It just clicks out of rubber holders. Then I take them to the shower and with warm water and dish washing liquid, I just clean them and the fabric with a soft brush. Makes sure that the soap creates lots of foam, and clean and clean, and rinse with warm water. you will be surprised how much dust and smoke will come out. They end up totally clean and smells nice afterwards :)

The rest of the speaker is cleaned with a damp cloth soaked in the same liquid and. Make sure it is not dripping wet, it should just be moist.

Thank you both for your input.

The smell is now almost gone. Here is what I did:

  1. Stored the speakers at a ventilated place for two three weeks, mainly because I had the possibility to do so until I had time to wash them
  2. Vacuum cleaned both the speakers and the fabric frets
  3. Washed the speakers with hot wather and vinegar

I have mounted the speakers on the wall now and they give no smell to the room. If I approach them closely with my nose I still can smell the smoke when I try to. I consider to clean the fabrics, either as Jacob proposes or only filling the bath tube with steaming hot water and vinegar and hang the frets above over the night.

I am also thinking how to clean the aluminium surface. Previous owner has obviously tryed to wash himselves, but probably with a liquid that was too strong.
