Has anyone noticed the flood of BeoSound 8 systems being sold on Ebay since the iPhone 5 was introduced? I guess there's little hope of an upgrade for us older BS-8 owners.

BeoLab 5, BeoVision 7-55 MK2, BeoSound 5 Encore, BeoSound 9000, BeoLab Penta III, BeoLab 8000, BeoLab 6000, BeoLab 2, BeoLab 7-6, BeoSound 8, BeoTime (analog clock), Beo 4 remote.

Hopefully that will create a trickle down effect that generates even more potential fans for B&O ... and Beoworld ... perhaps we should prepare for an avalanche of newbies and questions ("I bought on eBay the cool B&O speaker Phil Schiller should in t he Keynote, but how do I get my iPhone 5 to work with it") by preparing a mini-FAQ Big Smile

What's the problem..? As many Apple owners love to buy a new 'i-device' every time a new model is launched - why not buy a new BeoSound too..? Whistle

I doubt that's the case....they haven't received their iPhone 5 yet. Mine is on it's way, but I don't see the need to get rid of my BeoSound 8. Just buy an old iPod Touch or use your iPad. I'm using an old iPad 2 to control my BS8.

Seems farcical to get rid of a BS8, and lose money, when you could simply get an old iPod Touch to use with it. Indeed, I don't bother storing music on my iPhone, to save space!

I think this is caused by the Beosound 8s being given away free with a new TV. There's a promotion by B&O at the moment, and maybe those that are buying the TV see selling the Beosound 8 as a way to get a 'discount' on their TV.....

It seems to me that the same Apple-manufactured adapter that B&O is giving to Beoplay A8 owners will work on a Beosound 8 as well.  You just have to buy it at Apple for $29.

I wouldn't call it flood, but eBay is beast and people tend to follow lead with about anything what may catch some dosh :) comment about getting discount on TV's sounds very possible as well - at least in Britain everyone likes a bargain Big Smile

I have seen the same thing in Sweden on our local "blocket.se". Lots and lots. And a lot of people are selling several. I dont understand what is happening. Something strange going on.

Yes, that might work. however.. May be I'm wrong, but with the height of the adapter and the width of the lightning connector that is 1/4th smaller then the 30-pin connector, the iPhone5 will be standing top heavy in its docking station. My guess is this will not be recommended.

I agree, and it would appear to be pretty easy to design and produce a plastic adapter to slide and clamp behind the current one if it's that big a deal.  BeoSound 8 was built to accommodate iPad, anyway, so this would appear to be a bigger issue with products yet to be produced.

B&O is not giving away this adapter. They are making another dock themselves that you install instead of the 30 pin connector. On the A8 the dock is removable, so the B&O adapter will not fit the BeoSound 8. For that you need Apples adaptor.

I agree that the Apple dock adaptor will not be a good solution. The phone or iPad will sit far too high up and the round backrest support of the BeoSound 8 dock won't properly touch the back of the unit sitting on it.

Like I said in a previous forum thread, B&O needs to offer a replacement part that can be installed by a local dealer to replace the old BeoSound 8 dock assembly. My reasoning for this is that such a replacement part must already exist for the current dock. What if we damage or bend the dock on our BeoSound 8 systems? There must be replacement part for repair purposes, correct? Simply offer a new "lightning" version of the same part and charge money for it.

Now I understand. Here in Sweden, apple employees seems to get 50% off on any beoplay audio unit purchase. A friend if mine bought both the Beolit 12 and beoplay a8 this way very cheap. I guess others in the same situation is buying for half and selling for a few hundred dollars more? Annoying.

I don't think it is as straight forward as simply changing the dock itself. If you compare the list of compatible Apple products for BeoSound8 and BEOPLAY A8 they are different.

I have come across an instance where one particular iPod model would play on A8 but would not play on BeoSound8. In both instances the ipod was docked.

Time will tell if there is a solution to upgrade the integrated dock on BeoSound8 with the lightning connector. Even if there is an upgrade, unlike the A8 it will be permanent and therefore not backwards compatible with the other Apple devices using the 30 pin connector.

Michael,

I choked when I read your post about Apple employees receiving 50% off BeoPlay products. Reason was, that just can't be true. Judging by what the dealers margins are, impossible Apple staff get 50% off.

It is very true no matter what. It is some kind of internal campaign. I asked if he could order for me but he declined.

It certainly could be true. Employees at my local watch dealer are given, on average, one free watch a year, worth a few thousand pounds, by watch reps, keen for them to be seen wearing their watch. They then get the option to buy them heavily discounted after a couple of years.

One of my mates is the manager of a local menswear store and gets given free jeans every season by Edwin, Nudie and others. They are always current season stock, but the rep wants them to be wearing their product, so is keen for them to get what they want.

Just one note about Apple margins. Big players get big margins. When had a short-term contract with the biggest US tech publisher, they wanted a minimum 50% margin, when the standard margin is 30% max. No-one gets more than 30%. However, to get that US deal, we had to find 50% and that was exclusive to them.

Apple - with the quantity of stock they shift - will easily be able to dictate better margins on the products they sell in their stores. Don't want to play ball? Well, you won't be in an Apple store. So, trust me, it's not impossible.

I reckon that 50% markup probably easily done with b&o beoplay range. Let's face it the a3 can't really cost that much to make nor can the Beloit 12 or the beoplay 8. And don't forget bang and olufsen shops have big overheads rent, staff then there's free installation, aftersales care  and home visits I dought they could cover all of these with just 30% markup. And still be left with profit.

It's common place in most trades to double then add tax. Thats how it works in furniture shops, some triple then give big discounts. Currys and that used to be the same however with the Internet things may have changed

. But bang and olufsen isn't available online apart from beoplay which is only available through bando so they are in controll of prices. I would not be surprised if most products have a easy 50% mark up. The Beolit the beoplay 8 and the a3 can't cost much more than £200 each to construct package and ship.

My girlfriend is a make up artist and receives 80% off mac. And I know next sell all there returns fora round  18% percent the sale price. All of whih is profit to them as they cover this when pricing the product in the first place. Don't as me how I don't know. But it means that we all pay more so other people pay less.

What a vulgar subject. Considering all the tea I drink at my local store, I'd imagine they just break even!

Hmmmm im not too sure! 50% does seem a little too high - probably 40%. I reckon B&O stuff is around 30% mark up.

I know fragrance can be 200 - 300% which does upset me a bit when I buy a bottle of Tom Ford. Again designer clothes is 100% but electrical items is smaller.

I used to work on a weekend for a Technics/Panasonic specialists when I was at college and that was 22% only. Selling hifis at £500, you certainly had to sell a lot to make a living plus the customer always asked for a 'cash' discount!

Any excuse to bash apple and its supposed cult following by certain members , gets rather tiring after awhile...

Theres's a £25 adaptor for the dock . I'm sure even the average beoworlder could stretch to that.

Or they could always take out a loan.
