Just wanted to share my recent experiences working on a BG 8002, as the situation I encountered might be common to other users. After all, it turned out to be an easy fix.
On arrival, this deck was struggling with motor related issues. When pressing Turn, the motor would emit a short buzz and the platter turn a little, but after about a quarter of a turn, the BG would brake the platter to a stop (again with a buzz). This deck had been sitting idle for a few years.
Pressing Start would result in a short turn of the platter and a short movement (half a centimeter or so) of the pick-up assembly after which the pick-up would return and the platter stop. After trying to get the deck to play or turn by pressing the Turn or Play buttons numerous times, I could be lucky and get the platter to turn on 33 RPM, but pressing 45 would brake it to a stop again. Pressing Play would sometimes work, but after putting the deck in stand by for some time, the problems would be back. So, the problem seemed to be a power issue.
What fixed the problem was a total recap (which is not as labour intensive as it sounds) including the bipolar cap in the Power supply box. I made a bipolar 50 uF by coupling two 100 uF caps in reverse series, ie minus to minus or plus to plus (as shown on fellow restorer Beolover's website, thanks).
Now the deck is playing like it's 1982 all over again
