I am trying to figure out what cause major crackling noise with my B&O speakers. I have the followings setup with my Lexicon DC1 pre-amp before and using 12v trigger all has been fine. However, after 7 years usage, my lexicon finally gave up on me.
I bought a used Onkyo SC5507 to replace my lexicon, however, I have serious crackling noise coming from my speakers (could be from anyone one or a of them) when playing "any" surround mode, but none when using "all channel stereo".
I think it is the pre-amp that is faulty, but before I bring it in for service, I would appreciate any thought that could save me the trip.
Many thanks!
My set up is as follows:
Front Speaker: Beolab 8002
Center Speaker: Beolab 10
Surround: Beolab 4000
Woofer: Beolab 2
Pre-amp: Onkyo SC5507
TV: Pioneer Plasma

Hi chickenceo,
Welcome to Beoworld!
I would advise caution if you are trying to use the 12v trigger from an Onkyo amp with Beolab speakers, as Onkyo technical support have previously told me that the trigger output of their amps should not be used in this way.
It is for this reason that I don't recommend using the 12v trigger output from an amp directly to your speakers, but instead to use a separate 5v trigger that has been derived from the mains power supply.
I would advise contacting the company who sold you the 12v trigger cable, to see if they have tested this with your model of amplifier.
Kind regards, Steve.
Steve.

Hello Steve,
Thank you for your reply. Indeed I am aware of your warning in other thread that using 12v this way may damage the pre-amp. My wiring was done by B&O services and I have been using that with my Lexicon for the past few years, having said that, whether its compatible with Onkyo is something I should consider.
PS, I do have a separate trigger for the Beolab 10 though.
An update. Onkyo confirmed the surround decoder has broken down and will cost more than what I paid for the 5507 to repair it. So I am off looking for another amp.
Currently considering Pioneer LX83/73, and I notice it has a 5v output on top of the 12v trigger. Can I use the 5v output to trigger the beolab 10?
Thanks!
Holla
I maybe can confirm a problem with 12V trigger outs on non B&O preamp. Though it happens only on one of my preamp Rotel RSP-1068 using mid 90s Beolab 8000. Something at one 12V trigger out blew up. Who knows, maybe the old 8K are faulty. No Problems for years with my Rotel RSX-1055 and RSP-1570 on any of the Beolabs, including 8K, 6K, 7-X, 2. Cables came from av-connection.
My last trigger cable from them got heavy mains hum on all of my speakers. Not much fun to pay for nothing, no refund on return*. Maybe i give Steve a chance. But i dont like the idea of having extra power supply for every speaker, if i understand correctly. There must be an inline solution to harmonize the 12V trigger outs on problematic non B&O amps/preamps.
What about a list of non B&O amps, since when they were used with what Beolabs on triggger outs without any problems?
For instance:Rotel RSX-1055, 2009 > 2014, Beolab 8000, Beolab 6000, Beolab 2Rotel RSP-1570, 2012-06 > today, 8K, 6K, 2, 7-X
U could get information about the trigger pin on powerlink plugs and compare with the trigger out specs on that Pioneer.
*No refund on shipping cost! Of course i got money back for the cables.
I need more Beolabs!
My old lexicon had no problem with 12v triggering the Beolab8000, 4000, and beolab 2. And the trigger box for Beolab 10 has no problem. The fact that I blow up my surround decorder got me doubt if it has anything to do with the 12v trigger on my onkyo 5507, and I don't want to do the same mistake with my LX83.
BTW, I also didnt step down 12v->5v on my 8000/4000 and it worked fine for the past 7 years or so. Wiring was done by B&O services.
An update. I jumped the boat and got my Pioneer LX83 all hooked up with 12v trigger and no more crackling sound
However, I am still getting a slight hissing sound from my SR Beolab4000. The way I connect the surround speaker is LX83 to SL then beolink cable to SR. I will swap cable/ LR channel and what not to determine its cause later.
So Pioneer LX83 12V trigger Beolab 8002 (12v), Beolab 10(with separate trigger box), Beolab 2 (12v), and Beolab 4000 (12v) work fine.
I still missed my 5507, because I don't see the point having an amplifier but using only its preout function. Oh well.....
