I have sent myBeomaster5/Beosound5 system in for repair and after reading several posts on Beoworld, I fear that the motherboard will have to be replaced.

If that is the case, I am considering an upgrade to Beosound Moment. The Moment seems to have all the functions that I love about the BM5/BS5 plus additional features which my present system does not have.

However, the Moment seems to have been discontinued by B&O, so I may end up with a soundsystem which is already outdated?

So right now I don` t know what to do if I decide to replace my BM5/BS5.

So I would like to know about your experiences with the Moment: Is it still an up-to-date product and does it fulfill your expectations?

Or should I wait and see if B&O comes up with a replacement for Beosound Moment?

Thanks.

I’ve had my Moment since launch.

As you may see in various threads, it’s been a bumpy ride but resent software updates has made Moment a really nice product in my mind.

If you can find a second life product I would rather invest in that than try to revive a BS5.

I find it unlikely that BO would release a new Beosound/centre.

Think the time for such devices are gone.

I am considering a second hand product as they are reasonably priced here. So based on your information that may be the best solution.

The Moment offers all the functionalities that I miss with my current set up, and I have been looking in that direction for some time. I was just concerned that I might buy a product that B&O was no longer supporting. Based on my experience with BM5/BS5 that is still an issue.

thanks.

According to the info I have is that B&O have the ambition to continue to support the Moment for a foreseeable future.

They hopefully learned from the mistakes around Spotify and BS5.

Just out of curiosity, what specific features do you miss in BS5 that you see that Moment support?

This is good news.

I really like the BM5, its design and layout is amazing. Besides - of course - very good sound.

But I have 500+ CDs stored and navigating them is difficult. Yes, there are playlists but I want a more logical system where I can find music according to category. For instance, choosing only opera or jazz. This is not possible. Spotify does not work and NRadio becomes increasingly annoying, Often links to stations disappear. I would like remote control and have tried Creation5 on iPad. But this does not work properly. (Haven’t tried Beo6, though)

(I understand that the Moment can be controlled via a detachable screen. How does this work?)

I would like to give Deezer a try, and TuneIn seems to be a proper replacement of NRadio.

Regards

I think playlists are useless. I want to be able to search categories.

I thought Moment only supported Deezer. Can you choose other streaming services? Is Apple Music supported on Moment?

Regards.

Moment only fully support Deezer HiFi. You cannot add other streaming services. Apple Music is not supported.

For the music you have on your NAS, Moment only display them sorted by artist. You can search, and that search is over both your own collection and the albums you have marked as favorites in Deezer.

I think Tunein is a good radio service, so Im sure that is a good replacement for NRadio.

You can control Moment either through the detachable screen, remote (only volumes and next track) or the B&O app on your phone.

Here you can see some of the features and how they work in the version 2 firmware: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43QTgzzYjWw&t=13s

I have music tagged with catagories, for instance “opera”, “classical”, “jazz” etc. Can I search for a category and then have only my - for example - “classical” music CDs displayed?

Thanks for the link. I’ll have look.

Hello!
Does the moment feature a hard drive to store the music (which now would be on the BM5) or do I need a NAS somewhere connected by lan?
And could I still choose Radio (for arial) and N.Radio (for streaming) like with the BS5 to share on Masterlink/Netlink?

Thanks

You can from the app look at your content sorted based on eg genre like "opera". Its simply the way DLNA present the content. Can provide screenshot when I am at home.

I do not recall the Moment search function to cover e.g genre in your own collection.

I’ve just looked through your link and it seems that you can search for genres/categories but maybe only on Deezer? Otherwise many nice features and beautiful design as well. So it’s definitely a sound system that I will consider as a replacement.

Thanks for your help, it is really appreciated.

I purchased one of the very first BS5s when they came to market. In fact the Dealer at the time gave me their demo unit for a month.

The key to the BS5 was a) a rock-solid music file structure and b) buying a superfast 1TB Harddrive. Do that and with +600 albums, I found it was not lacking in terms of responsiveness and straight forward to clone-up. The Firmware of the motherboard however did not like SSD but I believe the Cruical MX300/500 series was found to be stable.

As I moved into NL TV products, that required a NL/ML Converter and for simplification, I moved all my music to a NAS and ran the BS5 (2 of them) that NAS rather than the internal HDD. I found by doing that music quality deteriorated somewhat (ML side). As time went on, I played more and more music via the Avant Homemedia Function (NAS). That in turn developed into more NL products like the Essence MK2 and the A6 for each room.

The BS5s I have are looking for a new home and although I found them a delight to use, times have moved on. As a standalone and in absence of Web music like Tidal/Dezeer etc..., I think they can still be valid. As an integrated NL component, No.

I have never seen the Moment as a step-up for a lot of reasons....maybe that is just me. The Essence/Core seems reasonable if your into iOS and have a NAS but again, the interface is pretty basic - even with the new APP.

I would hope from the heart that B&O would launch a high-end storage/server system to integrate with the NL system and deliver an operating system on par with Aurilic, Aurender, Aria (all the A's) and complement the BL90's but I think most of us know with our heads that ain't going to happen - or that most of will be shocked if the pull it off with a bug-free interface.

My current view: Buy a NAS, iPad Mini and a BS Core with the money you would spend on rebuilding the BS5 . Both fully re-taskable if the B&O audio-product scene changes.

I have been reading/skimming various threads about Moment and there seems to be mixed feelings about the system and whether it is worth the investment. Also from Mr 10percent’s comment above, I’m beginning to have my doubts about the replacement.

It seems that I can choose genres only on Deezer and not on my own collection. This is no different from BS5.

Of more concern to me is that - according to ‘the beta 2.x’ thread - music downloaded to a NAS will not play the music gapless. We listen mainly to classical music and even though music is divided into tracks, the music must be heard as one composition, one unity without breaks. For instance an opera with gaps is really an awful experience.

What I gather is that if I download music from iTunes and transfer it to  a NAS, then that music will be played with gaps on Moment? If that is the case, the Moment is not for me, and it is a downgrade compared to BS5. Music downloaded from iTunes plays beatifully on the BS5.

(On the side: I have for many years played around with the app Creation5 and tried all new updates. It has many issues but aside from that, it reveals BS5’s real potential. But also Creation5 does not play gapless on BS5 and that makes it useless for me.)

Correct. All music you have on your NAS (even it its coming from iTunes) is played with gaps unfortunately.

This is how it looks if you look at your NAS content from the B&O app.

It’s simply how DLNA present it. Here you can select Genre.

This is an example of how genres are displayed:

Under the genre the songs (not albums) in that genre are listed:

How come BS5 plays downloaded music gapless but not Moment?

Playback from NAS via the Moment is built on a plain DLNA protocol - and DLNA does by default not support gapless play.

For that you’d have to modify the protocol of the serving part - which a lot of companies have done.

As an example the Logitech Media Player (former Slimplayer) with their take on a music server (used for the Squeezebox).

Other smodify the receiver/player in order to fetch the next track before the previous has ended (a sort of cache function) - nd offers gapless play that way.

The BS5 plays directly from the hard drive of the BM5 (is a Windows system) - no DLNA involved there when the BS5 is used for playback.

Note: a streaming service like Spotify plays/can play without gaps!

Thanks MM. This makes good sense, and explains why I can do gapless playback on BS5.

I once contacted Creation5 to ask if they could implement gapless on the BS5, but they said that this would have to be done by B&O.

I got a call from my dealer today who told me that the harddrive was dead and had to be replaced. This would cost about 900 euros😱

I will of course not spend that amount of money on an old system, and a second hand Moment does not cost much more.

However, without gapless playback, the Moment is not for me and instead I might consider changing the harddrive myself. There are several threads in here about this, so I will have to do some studying before I decide what to do. I’m no technical expert, so this may be too complex an operation.

I’ll let you know what I decide to do.

Thanks for all you comments!
