Hello,

I am a happy owner of a Beocenter 9000 purchased ca. 1986. After so many years, It's starting to show its age: (i) lower glass panel getting loose (the glue has dried), (ii) some parts of the display (upper glass panel) don't lit until I tap on it, (iii) some CD's (specially those I burned myself) are unreadable, (iv) the CD door mechanism doesn't work unless I open/close it manually with a screwdriver (belt failure I guess), (v) the cassette recorder has an average audio quality, and rewind/fast forward are noisy.

Fortunately, I found a second hand Beocenter 9000 in a quite good condition and I just purchased it.

Now I have an "old" and a "young" BC9000; the latter works fine. The cassette recorder, in particular, shows a much better audio than the old one, whose heads are probably worn out. Unfortunately, it shows also an uncomfortable rumble or hum (50 Hz) during playback (even when playing a cleaning cassette). This hum only occurs with the tape1 source (cassette), not at all with tape2, turntable, radio or Aux. When I record on Tape1, there is no hum if I play the cassette on an other device, for example my "old" BC9000. The chassis earth connection is OK (I checked with and without earth connection). The hum is equally heard on both left and right channels, on loudspeakers or headphone.

Could this be related with a mains filtering issue? A faulty capacitor? A problem with the playback/recording head? A failure in the power supply section?

Anyway, my plan is to have both devices fully restored, with your help. Thank you in advance for your advice.

(See French translation here)

EDIT: unfortunately, the tape unit suddenly stopped working. Now it just makes kind of "tic" every second or so (with or without a cassette inserted), with a repeated very small transport move (maybe two turns, about 10 cm of tape). I'm afraid I'll have to look for a professional B&O specialist near Brussels :-(
