Hi,

‘I’m just wiring an apartment and am aware that Masterlink is more of a bus wiring system, but the layout of the apartment lends itself to a star- type wiring (with 3 devices connected to A cable coming from a beosystem 3). Would this cause any problems? It would be painful to have to wire them with a short piece of cable inbetween

Hi,

It is possible to star wire MasterLink using Cat6a or 7 cable. It is also future proof. You will need a Masterlink hub at the central point which the Cat6a/7 cables connect into and then cables at each socket to convert the RJ45 back into Masterlink.

If you're lucky should be able to find both on ebay.

Steven

Thanks.

I am using oem masterlink cable, really the question was whether having 4 ml cables connected (with 1feed) would work. I couldn’t see why not, but I hadn’t tried it before- mainly using bus-like wiring.

ML is a passive network so there's not really any topology considerations aside from all the wires need to be connected to each other, and there is some distance limit (but it's quite a long distance).  If you have oem masterlink cable with masterlink connectors, then there is a masterlink distribution box (like the Hub mentioned above, but using the big ML connectors instead of RJs) works well.  Otherwise, you can use masterlink junction boxes and patch the cables together pretty much however you want.

Maybe worth having a read of the Masterlink Handbook available here: https://www.beoworld.org/manuals_view.asp?pid=1248

No restrictions on use, other than maximum ML cable length of 400m!

Thanks.

I did use junction boxes before, but they never felt too secure (although I never had one fail), so I wire twist and solder and that makes them more secure.

Hi Frog,

Yes, this should be fine, as mentioned above the topology/layout of the wiring isn't critical with Masterlink.  The genuine B&O junction boxes are reliable, also soldering the wires is fine as long as they are insulated to stop them touching each other (please unplug all ML devices before soldering any wires as the tip of your soldering iron will usually be earthed).

I keep ML cables, plugs and connectors in stock if you need anything.

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve.

Thanks,

I’ve got all the bits I need. With these confirmations, I can go ahead.

regards
