I have a beogram 8002 that I recently repaired and got working. Unfortunately the deck has now stopped working due to a small accident.

I previously replaced capacitors, resoldered many joints and had the unit playing with full functionality and all buttons working.

But to my regret I had the unit standing with the lid open (‘service position’) when the hinges suddenly came loose and the upper part with the transformer fell over. I managed to catch it, but the unit has now stopped working. There is no visible damage anywhere and all connections/wires from the main board appear fine. Is suspect there is a connection broken somewhere in the print board, but I have no idea what to look for.

Display shows red dot when unit is turned on.
Platter does not turn when pressing turn or play (or any other button).
Display shows 33.33 and 45.00 when buttons 33 and 45 are pressed.
When pressing play display shows 33.

-Noting else is working. As far as I can check I have the correct voltages coming from the transformer.

Any suggestions on where to look for the error is appreciated. Are there specific voltage values that I could check in the board?

Thanks!

Hi,

There are so many things that could cause problems after a drop like that. The weight of the transformer when taking a hit will affect the board since the transformer is connected to it.

Checking the supply voltages is good but you need to check them after they go through the rectifiers. In other words make sure the DC supply voltages are correct.

If I had to guess though I would suspect connectors first. You said the platter doesn't turn. What about the tangential arm assembly? Does it move?
The main board of the Beogram 800x is small and the impact could have produced some cracked solder joints. I wouldn't think it is too likely that any electronic components were damaged unless you find that the board broke somewhere. So check for the connectors and their solder joints first.

Working on the Beogram 800x with the dust cover and tonearm lid attached always bothered me. Now I remove all of the turntable inner assemblies and test them out of the cabinet. It's easier to get to everything for measurements that way and no danger of accidentally damaging the dust cover.

Thanks for the advice which I will definitely apply to another BG8000 that I havent touched yet.

Tangential arm is not moving on the unit. I will check (again) that connectors from the main board are intact.

Then measure voltages after rectifiers. Do you have a short specification of the correct voltages and where to measure them? (I am still learning how this board is constructed)

Yes, here is a blog post I made on a recent Beogram 8000 in checking out the electrical function. The full restoration of this Beogram is in the following list of blog posts.  The Beogram 8002 restorations steps I used there on the BG8000. There are differences in the main board and microcomputer board but even those are very similar.

Problem appears to be solved. I found 3 broken tracks on the main print board next to the transformer. These where fixed by soldering small pieces of copper wire and now functionality is restored. Thanks Sonavor for your great posts which have been very valuable.
