I had my BG4002 serviced and aligned and a new Audio Origins 20CL cartridge fitted - on playing older vinyl it is absolutely fine, however with some new 180G vinyl there is some distortion. So Itried the record on my Linn Sondek and there is no distortion.

Looking online there are reports from some users with a Project Turntable and Ortofon Red cartridge that this could be because the tracking weight is too low.

Before I increase the weight on the BG4002 from 1g to more, I wondered if others had had the same problem with new 180g vinyl on a Beogram. To increase the weight I need to pull the deck out and it is not that easy to do so didn't want to do it if increasing the weight is likely to damage the cartridge and not yield a result.

Hi Andrew,

Same here. Several new records display that exact same problem. However, playing them on a Thorens with a recent AT ML cartridge poses no such issue.

But then, other new records play fine. 🧐

Whether it’s caused by too small a VTF is anyone’s guess.

Beogram 4000, SMMC 20 EN; Beogram 8000 MMC20CL, among others!

Jacques

Hi Chartz - thanks heavens, thought it was my turntable or cartridge - wonder if anyone has tried increasing the tracking force?

Try with 1.2 gr. I have a MMC2 from Axel at 1.2, And make sure your new 180 gr. vinyl is clean and free from the oil used when pressing new vinyl disks

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Hi Soren - I took the belt off and adjusted the tracking weight with an stylus weight scale - it is now 1.3g and that has worked! so thanks for the advice. It did however spark another problem - when I put the top plates back in the stylus didn't always drop first time and when it did was quite fast. With the plates removed it drops properly and is damped. Am I doing something wrong with the top plates as I tried without the spring clip thing in and although the plates are not completely level the arm drops properly? But with it in and the plates flush the arm drops too quickly or hesitates?

Arm problem sorted - one side of the spring clip thing was down, I pulled it up and now the arm lowers slowly - not sure why but just pleased my records play without distortion and everything works again

Do somebody know if they're is some general rules about offsetting pressure, Let me explain:

What's the more arming? Too much pressure? Not enough? For the record, for the deck or stylus?

And can somebody elaborate of the issue Andrew's had? How the weight of the vinyl (and even more that precise one) can be related with stylus pressure?
