Hello all,

I have a pair of Beolab 8000's that I use with an Onkyo NR-709. The problem I have is that the speakers keep being on (green) even after the receiver has been turned off. To me it seems like the receiver keeps giving the speakers some kind of signal? However my sub, which also is from the pre-outs, turns off as is should a bit after the receiver is turned off.

I previously had a Yamaha receiver, and did not have this problem at that time, however the speakers have not been used for quite some time, so I'd like to rule out the speakers before I start looking for a new receiver.

Does it "hurt" the speakers that I pull the plug out when I'm done watching Tv for the evening?

Thanks

Try disconnecting the line in cable and check if they still remain on. If they do, then the problem is in the speakers. If they don't, then the problem comes from your receiver (probably a ground loop or humm noise).

When I leave the speakers powered-on but unconnected they are mainly green but turns red like every two seconds.

Hi db8000,

Some Onkyo receivers make a physical disconnection to the pre-out sockets when they are powered off, which can leave Beolab speakers with an "unbalanced line" condition that allows the speakers to pick up induced electrical noise, hence turning them on unexpectedly.

The same situation can occur if the speakers have cables connected, but no receiver plugged in.  You can reduce this issue with good, well shielded cables and by moving the speaker cables away from any mains power cables.  Turning off other electrical items in the room can also resolve the issue if they are causing the electrical noise that the speakers are picking up - you can test this by turning off other devices one at a time to see how this affects the speakers.

A good test of the cabling would be to plug a phone (or similar device with a headphone socket) into the receiver end of the cables via a 3.5mm to RCA adapter, then see if the speakers function well without noise.  If the noise is absent then the issue is with the receiver.

Please let us know how you get on so that we can assist further.

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve.

Thank you for your answer! It's a shame I didn't know this before I bought the Onkyo. I think my cables are of pretty good quality, but its a snakes nest behind my TV Surprise I think I'll try getting a new (to me) receiver instead as I am not happy with the lip sync on the Onkyo anyways. I've been looking at a Marantz SR6007, do you know if that has any similar issues?

Thanks in advance

Hi db8000,

I haven't heard of any issues with the SR6007 - maybe other Beoworlders could comment if they are using this receiver with Beolab speakers?

It is also worth tidying the wiring and checking that the speaker cables and mains cables are run separately, as this will help to reduce any noise or humming problems.

Kind regards, Steve.

I recently went through a flurry of buzzing and humming.

I had MKIII cables, but I suspected them because they were cheap cables (I bought the BL8000 used with the cheap cables)

I tested various cables I had between all my different speakers BL9 and BL8000 and this was the result:

All of the following with cheap cables:

- Connecting a battery powered source, in this case an iPhone, there was no buzzing/humming. Soon as I connected a preamp, or a source connected to mains, the humming was there, in my case, a flagship Yamaha preamp.

- Connecting one BL9 with a cheap cable, no buzzing/humming... as soon as I daisy-chained to the second BL9 with the cheap cable, humming/buzzing started.

I took out all the cheap MKIII cables, and used high quality ones, and all the buzzing/humming stopped, no matter what configuration I tried. I even used a B&O MKII to one of the speakers because I ran out, and no humming.

Basucally, the only time the cheap cables worked was when I either connected a single speaker, or when I connected separate lines from a Beosound 9000 CD player. Good quality cables worked in all circumstances. I’m currently using the Yamaha CX-A5100 preamp with no issues.

Bottom line is that if you have a mixed bag of low quality cables, try to get all new good quality MKIII cables and see how it goes before getting a new preamp... it worked for me. Buy from a reputable maker like Steve. If anything, if it doesn’t help, at least you can use those new cables with a new preamp, and be resting assured that you’re doing a good job on the cables. Out of the 6 B&O speaker’s connected to my Yamaha preamp, only one still buzzes/hums a little, and sure enough, it’s the one long cable run that is scuffed-up and has the plastic sheath torn and filleted up in places. On my next cable set purchase, (I’m going to be adding 2 additional BL6000 speakers for a total of 8) ill be replacing the damaged cable.

Hello again!

I found a used Yamaha RX-V781 that I'm thinking of getting, just thought I'd hear here before if anyone has used one and if so, if they've had any problems with it?

Thanks

I'll reply to myself. I went ahead and bought that Yamaha receiver, and it doesn't keep the speakers on when they're supposed to be off.
