Hey fellow BeoHeads,

I just got a Beo4 remote with a used device I just bought.

The thing is, that it does not work with any B&O product I own, including the one it came with.

The Beo4 display works as it should and the IR blasts can be seen throng an iPhone front camera.

It does not work at all with my Beosound Century or my Beocenter 2.

It kind of works with my Beosound 1 (old) but only when I hold it not further than 10cm or so away from the BS1 and at a certain angle. Batteries are new.

I am confused because I can clearly see the IR in the camera.

Can someone solve this mystery?

Thanks in advance

Carlo

Hi and welcome to Beoworld.

The Beo4 may be in link mode (but this doesn't explain why it works up close with the BS1)

Anyway, see the following:

Follow the procedure below the make one of the Beo4's a link remote .

Standby + List together

Press List till CONFIG appears

Enter 2002 , the display should read LINK ON

Press Exit

This remote will now only work a Link device and will not interfere with others and visa versa . To reset to a normal remote remover and replace the batteries.

I think that you repeat the above procedure to get the Beo4 out of 'link mode', whereupon the display should show 'Link Off' at the appropriate point.

Good luck!

Thank very much you for your quick response, Guy!

I have tried the procedure multiple times but it didn't work. The Beo4 was aparrently not in Link Mode.

I also noticed that it only works with the BS1 if I angle it a certain way by pointing the tip of the Beo4 up.

This is very weird. Especially because it has worked a few hours ago, when I was picking up the device. Temperature changes during transport maybe? (It was cold in Berlin today)

Hi,

Have you tried new batteries?

Hi Bill,

yes I have. That was my first thought also.

Kind regards

Carlo

Do you have a plasma screen (turned on)  in the room - apparently these can sometimes interfere with the IR signal.

A further thought - perhaps the opther devices are in A.OPT 0, where they do not respond to IR commands.

To resolve this, for each device:

Turn to standby/off.

On the Beo4, press the POWER button and LIST together.  Then press LIST until OPTION is shown, press GO (centre button), and then press LIST to show A.OPT.  Then press 1.  The power light on the  device may blink to show that it has been accepted.

Then see if it works.

Thank you again for your help, Guy!

I have tried the procedure as you said. Unfortunately to no success.

Sadly I think the PCB is busted in some weird way, because of the short range response of the BS1.

This is a photo of the IR blast. Taken with the front camera of a iPhone 6.

Hi BeoBoehm,

In my experience having the IR lights blasting doesn't mean the remote is working.
You can read in the following thread my example of weird behavior with a Beo4: keys not responding after some time or unknown sequence/event.
The diodes were flashing well but the issue was there.

https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/33239.aspx

I ended up replacing the remote, if you're patient you can sometimes get them very cheap.

Sometimes simply taking the remote apart and re-assembly can be enough to get it working again.  I usually give it a good clean at the same time.  There's a thread somewhere about dismantling the Beo4.

Re-assembly worked here for a similar fault:  https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/35911.aspx

Here's the thread.  Maybe give it a try?  https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/21827/180453.aspx#180453

It's worth removing/replacing the little conductive strip between the screen and circuit board - that can sometimes affect more than simply the display!

Thanks again for your effort, Matador and Guy!

I have disassembled and reassembled the whole unit two times in the last few days, but again to no success.

I think I'll go down Matadors' route and buy a working unit with a broken display to swap the PCB.

I only hope this one survives the Berlin winter during transport.

Update: I went out and bought a heavily used Beo4 with a broken display for next to nothing. The seller claimed that it was fully funktional except for the display.

I swapped out the display into the "new" remote, wich was very easy.

But again the same problem!!!

Its fairly obvious that my music systems were the problem, and not the Beo4 to begin with.

As for the Century, it pushes on being 25 years old, so it would be no big surprise if a IR receiver would fail, isn't it? It needs mayor service anyways.
But could it be possible that it is not compatible with the newer Beo4 types?

The Beosound1 on the other hand technically works again with the new PCB, but again only from a short distance. Does somebody have experience with repairing the display/IR module? (I think I'll start a separate thread for this question)

As for the Beocenter 2, I think my mistake was that I was testing the device without connecting Beolabs onto it.

Once again thank all you guys for your answers!
