* sorry for double posting, but I'm not sure which forum gets most views.... I also put in the Workbench forum

Hi everyone.  I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on this one?  When you press the lift button, the solenoid that kicks the lever over doesn't engage....therefore the gear that turns to lower the tone arm doesn't move.  I don't have the schematic to know if the voltages I'm reading are correct, but I feel like it's getting voltage, but just not engaging. My thoughts are the solenoid is defective, but am not sure what voltage to try to inject into it to test it properly.

If anyone has any thoughts, parts or schematic that would be great.

Thanks,

Greg

The most common cause of this is the microswitch under the lift button. It either becomes oxidised,or needs to be adjusted for correct operation.

The relay's are very reliable.

The start procedure is:Pressing the lift button connects the relay across the power line. When the relay energises,it's contacts connect the motor coils to start the turntable.Simultaneously,a lever on the relay pushes a another lever(on the cam lifting wheel)to engage with the now turning turntable shaft, which then turns the cam wheel too,to start the cycle.

Pressing lift again, after the arm has lowered, will restart the cycle to raise the arm.

I imagine that the circuit/manual is available on site, but you will need to increase your subscription level.Well worth it too,for access to masses of tech info!

Nick, thank you for the reply. I'll look into the subscription for the site as well.  I forgot to mention that I've already resurfaced the contacts on the lift micro switch and the relay contacts.  I've also checked continuity on the switch and it's OK.  The orange light comes on when you press Lift so that seems to eliminate the lift switch.  It doesn't seem like there's too much left, so as far as I can tell, the relay is defective.  Any chance you know if one is available somewhere?

Thanks,

Greg

It could be a very dumb assumption but have you checked that the moving platter around the tone arm fixation doesn't react?

I mean, couldn't it be the tone arm height too much raised, making it dropping from far too high to just too high?

HI, yes if I manually engage the relay the mechanism does lower the tone arm properly.  Basically the relay does not engage when you press Lift.  Therefore the automatic function does not work, nor does the tone arm lower when in Manual mode.

If the turntable turns(or at least starts?) when pressing the lift button, and the orange light is on,it seems as though the relay is functioning.

The power connections of the relay to the motor are held closed by the action of the cam lifting wheel. The relay only initiates the cycle.

Here's a thought, mad or what?Is the unit set to the correct mains voltage for your country (110v?)

Another strong possibility,is that one of the "trigger" lever's is stuck or even missing from the camlifting wheel!!!

I've seen this where perhap's someone else has tried repair earlier, and lost the lever!!!

Thank you for the reply.  The turntable does not start when pressing the lift button.  Only the orange light will light and the relay does not engage.  If the relay would engage then the turntable's automatic start and lift functions would be working.  If anyone has an idea where I might find a new or good used relay that would be great.

Thanks,

Greg

Has the motor seized?
That's quite common due to dried lubricants.

Hi Martin, the drive motor works fine in manual mode and the platter turns, however pressing lift doesn't engage the gearing to lower the tone arm onto the record.  Pressing Lift lights up the orange light but the relay doesn't engage to kick the lever over which starts the cycle for the gearing to drop the arm.  I'm pretty sure there's not much left but a defective relay.  Are there any relays available?

This seems to be another case of "not being able to see the wood for the tree's"?

If the orange light  illuminates when pressing lift, the relay must be energising and closing the contacts that the supply the light and motor.

As you say though, everything points too the relay being u/s,although in my experience(at least!)it's unlikely. You will struggle to find another I fear, although the BG2002/3 use the same item.

The "throw" of the relay lever's is adjustable by moving the relay body via a cam in the chassis, which may improve the action of engaging the lever's with the turntable gear

Open circuit relay coil?
Open circuit diode or shorted capacitor inside the relay housing?
