Beogram 5500 flashing tone arm and Beosystem

Hi there,

I’ve put myself under a bit of pressure as it’s the wife’s 60th this year and she’s arranged a bash at home, with a fair number of guests turning up. The invites included a note to “bring some vinyl as Richards getting his deck out (referring to my Beosystem 5500). So having spent 2 years redesigning the garden I’m now under pressure to get my Beosystem working. Dug it out last night (not been used for a fair number of years). As expected there’s a number of issues!

Beogram CD5500 powers up, draw won’t open but if CD inserted it seems to read and move between tracks. Connected to my Beomaster 6500 (had front changed to Beomaster 5500 by dealer when bought new as I wanted powerlink) no sound, slight sound if you turn up to high volume. Same if you connect to Beomaster 5500, which I also have had from new. Radio seems to work o.k. on Beomaster  6500. 

Beogram 5500 turntable same issue with Beomaster 6500 but works with Beomaster 5500. The playing tone arm was flashing 33 but has stopped but don’t know why. 

Beocord 5500, have two of these. One the draw opens o.k. even had a tape still in it and it played o.k. The fast forward was a little slow. The other one powers up but draw tries to open but won’t. Suspect it might need belts. 

Beolab 4000, have two pairs of these but only had time to try one pair, of which only one speaker power up, the other is dead. I know these have a foam rot issue and I’ve not checked this yet. These have hardly had any use. 

I’m trying to contact “Dillen” for new belts as he seems to be the go to man for these. Any other pointers or help would be greatly appreciated. 

Having had all units out in my dinning room I’m of the opinion that the Beomaster 6500 seems omit a electrical type smell, not a burning type smell but it definitely has a smell about it.

I’ve also got a Beosound 9000 which seems to have issues moving between CD’s and the carriage drops to the bottom (it’s vertically mounted). Once up and running it seems to work o.k.and suspect the lack of regular use might be a factor.

As a back up I’ve bought a playmaker from a dealer, just need to sort out how I connect

Ok, so since you have a time limit approaching, you should set your priorities. The BM6500 may not be the right match for your BG5500 because the BG does not have an RIAA preamp built in as the BM requires. That would account for the low level sound from LPs.

Although the BC and BGCD may need work, if your priority is LP, you may be just fine with working through the little issues for now.

You didn’t mention the other pair of speakers. Assuming you can pick two working units, you could always use the RCA jacks from the preamp output of the BM. Good luck.

The speed indicator flashes when you activate the repeat function (one repeat play per Play pressing).

Hi Dom,

The Beomaster 6500 and the Beogram 5500 worked together previously. I bought the whole 5500 system complete but bought the Beomaster 6500 once I’d part exchanged the the Red line 140 speakers for a pair Penta 2’s then realised I wanted power link. I got the dealer to change the Beomaster 6500 front for a 5500. Now I do think the dealer might have retro fitted the RIAA to the Beogram 5500, but I’d need try and find the receipt.

I’ve less of an issue with speakers as I’ve a pair of Penta’s and some beolab 8000. The Penta’s will work with the Beomaster via the 4 pin cables which I think I’ve still got.

Whilst I have the manuals somewhere I can’t easily lay my hands on them.

How do I purchase a set of belts for the Beogram 5500 and Beocord 5500 and CD 5500. Is it a DIY type job? I reasonably component mechanically and did at our previous house install the master link system in four of rooms, without issue. 

I fell in love with B&o when my Dad bought a system and it was one my first major expenditures in life and it did start to get out of hand at one point. But in recent years I’ve lost interest as B&o seem to only make TV’s and speakers, all at silly money. Bring back the 80’s and 90’s
