hi All,

my CD6500 won’t perform !

disc is rotating briefly after ‘play’ and then just stops after a few seconds - that’s it ??

I verified the +5V and -6V are present, voltage regulators are fine.

the servo boards had all caps replaced incl the “famous” one C2103 (a Vishey replacement)

+\- 15V are present.....!

some help is badly needed - can anyone assist ?

thank you

Take a closer look at the laser lens. I had similar problems on my deck. That was because the neodymium magnets of the focus actuators had decomposed and there were little black needles around the lens.

I remember that I had to take off the focus coil to get to this point

Thanks for your concern, but

i do not believe this is the case with my laser unit.

the machine acts quite erratic - i verified the laser current adjustment as per SM

but what is interesting is the fact when a disc is loaded it doesn’t initially spin to read the TOC ?

if I press play the disc spins, TOC is red and we are up and running.

if I however push the CD loaded tray in by hand the disc performs its initial spin, reading the TOC and the disc starts playing......???

i am totally in the dark about whats going on here ?

quite obvious there is something wrong here, but what ???

I didn't believe either! Same behaviour on my deck, sometimes working sometimes not. I dicovered that only by accident. I removed the magnetic dust with another much stronger magnet.

Back on the CD player:

i revisited the laser current adjustment, which was too low at around 23mV !!

also readjusted the metal brace that lifts the CD pug.

the player is now starting & playing the disc, however sometimes there is an awful static noise when switching tracks.....?

not sure whether this is coincidence but it seems after playing quite a number of discs it suddenly turns off......

i know the player warms up nicely,  that is why I want to raise the question of a possible temp failure - all solder joints are fine, caps measure ok.

then there is the big IC on the servo board ......?

don’t really know where/what else to check......anyone any suggestions, pointers ?

happy to listen 🙏🤙
