Dear Beoworlders,

Recently I bought four Beolab Penta's via auction. They were listed as MK1's, but when picked up I noticed they were type 6631 and the middrivers looks like new, lucky me!

Because I don't have a 5.1 (or 7.1) set yet, I was thinking to use the Penta's for such. I know this would be overkill, but won't it be a beautiful one? I have a set of Beovox 3000's and a set of 5000's and was thinking to use one 3000 as centerspeaker. Any suggestions of any other combination?

I'm also wondering if the Penta's in the back will play as loud as the front and if this is adjustable on a receiver (I know I need a receiver with 5.1 pre-out), because the speakers in the back will be much closer than the front.

I've already read this thread which was a lot of help (thanks Kallasr!) https://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/2420/32062.aspx

Looking forward to your opinions!

Kind regards,

Simon

Use them! Rule number one, there can never be enough Pentas!

Hi Simon,

I had exactly the same "problem" a few years ago, I bought two Pentas and ended up with four Big Smile

I had them set up in my workshop for several years and enjoyed the best sound I had ever had until my good lady wife "suggested" that two of them had to go Crying

I am still enjoying the remaining two Pentas now!

By adding an AV receiver with pre-outs, you can link the four speakers for surround sound and balance both the volume and timing of the sound to the rear speakers so they don't over power the fronts.

I would suggest looking at the Pioneer SC-LX59, Denon AVR-X3400, Yamaha RX-A830 or RX-V775 AV processors/receivers, all of which have audio pre-out sockets for easy connection of Beolab speakers for a Dolby surround sound setup.

You can connect stereo Beolab Penta speakers to one of these processors using these cables (one set of cables is needed for each pair of speakers to be connected):-

Hello Beovox141 and Steve,

What's your setup Beovox141, I can't exactly see it, besides there are four of them :)

I came across this solution which was mentioned by Kallasr, powerlink to RCA and a trigger plug. I read somewhere the speakers otherwise will "plop" when the Line input is used. https://www.av-connection.dk/?PNo=AV-TRKDIN8-51A

Do you have experience with this? And what's the main difference between the line-input and powerlink?

Kind regards,

Simon

Hi Simon,

The speakers shouldn't make a plop when they turn on and off, this is a sign of components deteriorating in the speakers if they switch loudly.  My Pentas just make a quiet click as they turn on - this noise is the same, whether you use the Line or the Powerlink inputs.

You don't need a trigger input on the speakers if you are happy for them to be in Auto mode and turn on when the music plays - they will stay on until 3 minutes after the music has stopped.

The sound quality is exactly the same via the Powerlink and the Line inputs.

I would suggest that you are very cautious about any trigger cable that takes its trigger signal from the 12v output of a receiver - all of the receiver manufacturers that I have spoken to said that their receivers should not be connected in this way and that a cable of this type could void their receiver warranty.  Please ask if you need any further help to safely trigger the speakers.

Kind regards, Steve.
